Fur, Fish and Game is the only outdoors magazine I read all the way through anymore. The others go in a box to give to my dad after flipping through them for a bit. Maybe you could reanimate some of the dead writers who were so good; the best could tell a hunting or fishing story as if you were there with them without it being a four point bullet list of how to do (whatever) or a puff piece on the sponsors equipment.

So what I'm getting as this goes on is that everybody wants their own individual magazine specifically catered to their own wants and desires....Might be hard to do.
Keep the comments coming though. Good stuff.

Good writing and story telling transcend hunting and fishing or any other topic. Of course, you still have to sell enough magazines and advertising to stay in business. I would hope the two are not mutually exclusive but the current "hook and bullet rag" market is pretty dismal.

As far as a magazine on hunting:

Stick to hunting and conservation. No fishing, "culture," or obituaries.

Make sure that there is "full disclosure" in that the financing of the trip is noted- I'm not talking IRS level, but rather if the writer is being sponsored on a junket or if they are not paying the full going rate, it should be noted. If the hunt is donated by someone, that should be stated. Any "industry" relations should be documented.

Since its a membership organization, any payment for the article that differs from the usual members' compensation should be noted.

Since this is a membership magazine, the ads should be clearly marked as such, and sponsorship noted- (it does not have to be negative, a comment like this article was generously donated by XYZco. is fine.)

For any magazine on "international hunting" there really is little need for articles on hunting species available in the majority of the readership's locality. No white tail or turkey, no local bird shooting ( I would say bird shooting in general, except there are some limited types of bird hunting that are only available by traveling.)

If its a hunting magazine, avoid publishing articles on animal control shoots- TX aerial hog shooting, night time hog shooting, prairie dog, etc. Essentially, if its high volume shooting its not hunting (not that it is bad, but it is just not hunting.)

Ideally, the advertising should be less than the content number of pages.

In a membership organ, I much prefer to have mostly (read exclusively) member content over professional articles- I can get the pro stuff from paid sources; its very hard (and why I spend so much time here) to get nonprofessional affectionado writing that is done just to share the fun that someone had.

Well, how about it Gayne?? Disclosure would be great, including disclosing your hunts were financed on the backs of others via bankruptcy.

Gayne,

I for one would like to see an article per issue dealing with conservation or other projects DSC is involved with.

Agree totally. In addition to this irritation is the starting of a new article on the back of the page of a current article, when something else could have been substituted. From time to time, I tear out an article, only to find that the subsequent article is of interest as well necessitating a trip to the xerox machine to copy the back page.

There are a number of good writers here on AR. JudgeG, Fairgame, and KT Safaris come to mind, but I know there are many others. We get to read their stories here on AR, but I wouldn't mind reading them in Game Trails.

I personally think it would be nice to feature a "hunt report" very similar to how many of the reports here on AR are done....(i.e. - very structured and informative with good photos).

I like being able to glance over an article quickly and see what country/area was hunted, what weapons/ammunition were used, what game was hunted, what time of year, what outfitter, etc...to see if I am actually interested in devoting the time to read the article or not.

I like the story telling part. The adventure of new lands and animals. The people you meet when hunting abroad. Things like that. I really don't need to be convinced to buy anything, or how the newest wiz-bang bullet performs. I like moderation on the tech stuff, and story telling on the other. I personally like Walt Prothero writings.

"What do I want in a hunting magazine?"

Well the first thing I want is articles about hunting! Secondly, I want articles about the firearms used in hunting, and thirdly I couldn't give a damn about what wine I should set out on the table at home, or in camp.

The magazine that comes closest to what I want is SPORTS AFIELD since Dianna Rupp took the rains! homer sofa

I have no objection to some hunt related art, or hunt related clothing but I don't hunt in jewelry stores or in a cigar shop. Give me articles about the fire arms that are written by people who know of what the write, and leave the Neiman Marcus type crap out of my hunting magazine!

Plus one on "good writing", that's why I brought up Shane Mahoney. Not good! People involved with magazines have as much to do with making a good product as the content contained within it. Enough said.

That's why the DSC established a committee to present a Literary Award each year. It is given to honor the best article written by a DSC member whose day job is NOT connected to the hunting or gun-writing industry.

Most of the hunting stories in the DSC pubs are submitted by regular Joes who don't get paid a dime for their efforts. They just want to share their hunts with the rest of us.

And if they can ably articulate a fine yarn, then they should be recognized. We should support as many stories from the DSC rank and file as possible.

I would like to see a couple of hunt reports by competent writers/hunters that paid the full price and post a real report.

On equipment - I would like to see field test reports by people who are not paid to test it or are not getting something for nothing. Terry Blaukamp writes for DSC and he is a 100% volunteer and writes the truth.

I get weary of Boddington, Shockey, Weiland and others touting every gun or scope or bullet out there. They rarely are objective. I realize they make a living off the products they represent, but I have serious doubts that Shockey would shoot a TC at the stuff he shoots it at unless he was paid to do it. Same with Boddington and Ruger rifles.

In this new age of digital photography there is NO excuse for wasting ink and page space on subpar images.

On quality photos in an article, I have one bitch! I hate pictures that are not accompanied by at least a four or five word caption. to at least identify the species or other short info in relation the article. SCIs Safari Magazine rarely captions the photos!

Most of the members here on AR are aware of the different species in pictures, but most young people need the information the caption provides.

Some writers have a gift of the written word that brings the mental pictures to the reader's mind, but a writer who lacks this gift, pictures are the heart and mind of an article!
