The 458 you mention was made in the T/C custom shop and is not a production rifle. On the other hand I own three of the T/C Icon rifles in regular off the shelf calibers and they are all very accurate with store bought ammo.

The last time I called and asked, the custom shop is closed. No reopening date was given. Things have changed some since Smith and Wesson bought out the original rifle.

Boliep has it exactly right. The custom shop made the gun for me, and now that S&W own them, the custom shop is closed. You can get an Icon and have a rifle maker turn it into a big bore. I just had a .416 Rem made and it is excellent. Groups basically a clover leaf at 100 yards.

Former T/C Shill Larry Weishun had one in 416 Rigby and used it to shoot a buffalo. Shot him close ~10 yards or so. Took him about nine (9) seconds to effect a reload including recocking the hammer. Lucky for him the buffalo turned and ran AWAY from him. So it begs the question WHY?

I agree with Jorge, "WHY", but I suspect the answer from the owner is because I wanted to!

I have a TC handgun that is chambered for .411JDJ. It was made by re-chambering a super 14 barrel originally chambered for 41 Rem Mag. It had a permanently installed 2 1/2 inch muzzle brake so it can be legally used with a rifle stock. After I had this thing made I asked the same question Jorge did, and my answer was simply because I wanted to.

Now would I shoot a cape buffalo with it? Yes, but with the proviso of, With some one standing beside me with my 470NE double ready to hand the loaded rifle to me if needed. It will never happen however because I will never take it to Africa. If it was a double barrel I might think about it, but I still doubt I would anyway.

The Icon is a bolt action rifle guys. Interesting how fast Tim and others dumped their single shots once they became available. What message does that send?

AAW- I totally agree that a bolt or double is better for DG than a single shot. I did not mind shooting 2 buff with my single shot Encore years ago, but I was very picky about taking the exact right shot, but then again, many have doe the same with a Ruger #1.

Yes many have used single shots. CB used to pooh pooh single shots but he has used them of late. But let's face it: if you are serious, why pick a single shot?

Love my 7mm-08 SE Icon but it hates to feed from the magazine and I have struck out trying to get an aftermarket magazine system for it. I may try a cut down LA floor plate but haven't decided. I tried Badger but they said they no longer make the Warlord magazine/bottom metaland even if they did they couldn't sell me one. TC also refused to sell me the Warlord bottom metal. The rest of the gun is as solid as can be but the second round jamming bugs the crap out of me. If I hadn't had recent bad experiences with TC's warranty dept. I would just send it in. Stupid plastic magazine.

From the T/C Icon site about the recall:

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE - June 13, 2013

PRODUCT:
ALL Thompson/Center Arms ICON®, VENTURE® and DIMENSION™ rifles manufactured before June 13, 2013.

DESCRIPTION OF THE HAZARD:
Thompson/Center Arms has identified a condition where the safety lever in certain rifles may bind preventing the safety from becoming fully engaged. In this situation, closing the bolt may move the safety to the fire position. The rifle will not fire unless the trigger is pulled. However, out of an abundance of caution, we are initiating this recall to allow for the prompt inspection and, if necessary, the repair of each rifle.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT INVOLVED:
This recall applies to all ICON, VENTURE and DIMENSION rifles manufactured before June 13, 2013. The following is a list of affected models:

Icon Venture Dimension
Icon Classic Venture Predator
Icon Weather Shield Venture Infinity
Icon Precision Hunter Venture Dream Season
Icon Warlord Venture Weather Shield
Icon Field Venture Compact

REMEDY/ACTION TO BE TAKEN:
STOP USING YOUR RIFLE.

To remedy this condition, your rifle will be inspected and if necessary repaired at no cost to you. Your firearm will be returned as quickly and efficiently as possible. All shipping and repair costs will be covered by Thompson/Center Arms.

Even in the recall condition, the rifle will not fire unless the trigger is pulled. Therefore, always follow these basic firearm safety rules:

Keep your chamber unloaded until you are ready to shoot.
Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction.
Never place your finger on the trigger until you have made a conscious decision to fire your rifle.
Outside the United States, click HERE for a list of Authorized Warranty Centers that will repair your rifle.

VERIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION:
When your rifle is returned, you should note a punch dot on the safety lever. See the photograph below. This punch dot is confirmation that your rifle has been inspected and the hazard has not been found or has been corrected.

When your rifle is returned, you should also note a red star on the label on the outside of your box. See the photograph above. This mark is further confirmation that your rifle has been inspected and the hazard has not been found or has been corrected.
