Hunting Report subscriber Mark Hampton took a great Nubian ibex in the Sudan. This is an area that gets all too little positive press. Click this link for a look at this special trophy: http://www.huntingreport.com/t...y_gallery.cfm?id=354 It a shame to think what it used to be like hunting the Sudan, but it's good to see there's still some hunting going on.

That is cool. I have the Ibex bug, and that is one fine looking Ibex. Mark usually only hunts with a handgun, did he take this one with a handgun?

I thought USA citizens were forbidden to due business in the Sudan at the present time. Did that change or am I wrong?

Wendell, Couldn't take that one with a handgun. It was quite an experience though, and my 13th specie of ibex. Angelo Dacey turned 76 the day I took that ibex. A celebration for us both. Currently, you cannot import the trophy back to the U.S.

Helluva goat Mark! Tell us how the hunt went. How was the stability in that area of Sudan, length of hunt, areas hunted, etc.. I'd love to hear the story!

Scottyboy, There will be an article published soon so I can't say too much other than my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Having the opportunity to hunt with Angelo Dacey was rewarding enough. Thanks

Hey Mark, didn't know you were an AR member. I figured it might be hard to import a handgun into Sudan, we couldn't get it done in Tanzania, I would have been shocked if you got it done in Sudan. I look forward to the article. Stay well.

My husband has been exchanging e-mails with Angelo Dacey regarding a hunt. We received the Safari Times newspaper today and on the front page it states "Sudan Hunting Prohibited by U.S. Government". What is the issue here? I thought if you did not bring a firearm/ammunition or export the trophy it is legal? Kathi, When The Hunting Report originally reported on Sudan in 2006, the general counsel for OFAC who oversaw the sanctions for Sudan said that travel related transactions were exempt. He specifically said the exemption included hotels, licenses and other pre- and post-hunt expenses. Since then OFAC seems to be taking a different stance and is discouraging hunters from going at all since money for their license will be funneled back to the Sudanese government. The situation is quite ambiguous and care should be taken. Sanctions have long been in place, but how they're enforced can change. And, of course, these restrictions only apply to US citizens.

Nice goat... I'll join the chorus of those who did not believe a hunt in the Sudan was available to Americans. Color me wrong. On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
