I do not recall that CBP has required a copy of this form for retention in their office. A strict reading of the instructions does not include that language. Is this a regulatory or legal requirement? Does this have the potential of being shared with another Federal agency?

I've always taken in my own form and left with that same form. No copies involved. The CBP folks did consult a computer screen while I was there.

Don't know about requirements, but at the DFW CBP office they have not made copies of any 4457 I have presented.

Ditto. I was just at the CBP office in Las Vegas on Monday and obtained 4 new 4457s. They did not make any copies. Big Grin

CBP office at Norfolk, VA airport made a copy and put it into a file today as they had advised would happen. Go along with this or cancel our African trip. They said we were the fourth African trip there this week. I had called Atlanta and they said that is their procedure also. Back to my question, is this the law or regulation?

Presuming you are a paid member of the NRA I recommend you send the question in email form to... ILAlegal@nrahq.org

I would really be interested in the answer to this! All my guns should be arriving from the UK after my repatriation to Texas. I am going to have to get 4475's for anything I might take out back out of the country for hunting. It would be great to be fore armed with knowledge.

I did 2 at SFO in January and it was same old deal. I had to show the guy where the serial numbers were on the rifles. They never looked at a computer or copied anything.
This may be somebody going off on their own interpretation of the law or is it something new?

I have obtained numerous 4457's in Oakland, Ca and never had them keep a copy. I've even had some officers fill out two forms for each gun, so I had a spare.

Frostbit,
I emailed NRA/ILA right after posting. Auto response was they get a lot of inquiries and may not be able to provide an individual response. Please add to the inquiries if you can and share the response here, as will I. My NRA membership exceeds 40 years.
My 4457 experience began in 1997 and this was the first time a copy was required.

Chicago wasn't keeping copies as of last month when I had one signed and stamped (and returned to me as usual). They also did not check against a computer database as others here have experienced.

I do not believe there is any law or regulation that requires them to maintain copies of a 4457. Whether it is permitted or not I don't know.

Returning through Hartsfield this week two officers were checking firearms. One was recording serial numbers on the computer while the other was reading them off to him. In asking them why they were recording the serial numbers they said it is required. Due to time constraints I decided not to fight it.
