Southern Gals. An amusing incident.

I write of a fairly amusing incident from my last safari. At least it was for us men who were hunting.

I had the pleasure of entertaining txsouthpaw and his most delightful wife, a bubbly vivacious girl of pure Texan blood. With us she was to witness her first kill on African soil. What I like about Texans is that they bring you presents and then present then to you before they know of you and before the safari, and although very sweet it is somewhat strange and for me slightly discomforting. A bit like tipping the waiter before a fine restaurant dinner.

After her first day in the field the madam for Texas remarked that she had not been that dirty since she was twelve years old. Anyway you get the gist of the gal and whilst she was just one of the most delightful of Texan flowers she knew jack shit about the hunting and of buffalo.

It was early and still dark when I awoke the Madam and her Bwana from their slumber. The buffalo were all around camp and Lion were amongst them. This particular Lion had kept me from my sleep. He was at that moment busy tearing into the hindquarters of buffalo and the Madam likewise into a lump of toast. A quick gulp of coffee and we stumbled into the dawn.

The cold had engulfed the floodplains in a thick mist, which is typical of our winter. Us English call it a pea souper. Thick and glutinous. We tracked the buffalo by sound as visibility was but a few feet. It was a vast herd and in the dull metallic gloom we managed to keep abreast of them. Later a few fingers of light lit the foggy landscape and revealed a wave of undulating buffalo. A sea of grunting bodies and clashing horns. Madam was doing some undulating of her own and hit the turf quite badly and dislocated something or other. However her gritty smile reminded me again that she was from Texas.

The first buffalo in focus was a bull trailing the herd and had been gored by Lion and we managed to avoid his sorry ass on a number of occasions. The Madam tended to stray now and again and was told to stay behind us and she stuck to the back of her man’s shirt.

Fast forward.

A buffalo is down but he isn’t dead yet. Men step quietly forward with glistening guns pointed with intent. Vision is tunneled as we hunters decide on the final shot.

The Amusing Incident

Vision is tunneled as we hunters decide on the final shot. A portion of the heaving shoulder could be seen in the grass and my man had it firmly in his sights. Our whispered discussions were then interrupted by the Southern Belle doing what can be best described as a pirouette on an anthill in front of our writhing Buffalo. For a moment I thought she was going to burst out in song maybe a little ditty from The Sound of Music. With no idea where the buffalo lay and with hands on her hips she hollered ‘Y’all finished now?’

That was the moment she removed the D from DG.

And Andrew, how remiss it was of me to fully explain to the Madam that buffalo were truly Dangerous Game (I'll get grief about that for years). I'd have to say, she was quite the trooper, joining our every footstep throughout, as she said, the most memorable experience in her life. And about almost stepping on a Black Mamba, and those eggs fried over easy...

surefire7,
From the pics, it appears to be a left handed rifle and the reply from txsouthpaw sounded like he owned up to his lovely spouse! (as well he should) My wife is also a Txn and would never consider going on a buffalo hunt with me, dangit!

Gotta love them Texas gals!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

I would never bring my wife on a DG hunt, she would never be able to keep her mouth shut while stalking..

AND she would be pestering me when/if drinking more than one G&T....

My ex would have been the loud talker and complained about the dirt. Of course, she was a Mississippi beauty queen.

There are worse things in life than being married to an extremely beautiful southern belle.
As a matter of fact, just about everything else is worse.
