I've been wanting to go hunt in Africa ever since I was a little kid and now I can actually do it. Some of the species I wish to hunt are buffalo, waterbuck, lechwe, nyala, warthog, zebra, giraffe, crocodile, kudu are the main animals I would like to hunt. Now I know this is probably impossible on one trip just curious as to where the best places to hunt 40+'' buffalo and also have a shot at some of these also. I probably would do a 10 or 14 day hunt. Does anyone have any suggestions on places/outfitters/ph's? Any info would be helpful. Thank you.

IMO, Lechwe and Nyala are your primary problems in making this a one trip bag. Drop the lechwe and you can find an operator in Save Conservancy of Zimbabwe with all of the remaining species. Take out the lechwe and I killed most of and saw the remaining species in Zim in 2009. Save Con. also has 40+ inch buff.

There are also good nyala in Mozambique as well as big buff and monster crock. Again, no lechwe there.

There are canned lechwe in RSA, but I THINK most are red lechwe. Black and Kufue lechwe are hunted primarily in Zambia, in two separate locations (Kafue Flats and Bangweulu Swamps) involving multi camps and charters. Pretty specialized and pretty spendy.

I'd recommend the Save Conservancy or just across the border in Moz.

Swap the Nyala for a Sitatunga and Zambia would be the place for Buffalo, Croc (Luangwa), Black Lechwe-Sitatunga (swamps) Waterbuck (Common or Defassa). However, as Will said, that can get pricey to do it all as you would move areas. Otherwise, Mozambique if huge Croc's are a main wish. You can get great Sable, Buffalo and Nyala there too. Most likely your best deal would be Zim. I can recommend some good Outfitters if you like.

Ha Ha - funny how everything nowadays seemed to be “canned” - especially when associated with SA. – I have to wonder why that is?

I wonder how many of the "cannery experts" have hunted in Texas or Florida for example?

Can you say conundrum!

Really big buff on a monotinous bases Rungwa, Rukwa, Maswa, or Eastern Tarangire in Tanzania.

You could take everything except the giraffe and lechwe in the Zambezi Delta area of Mozambique, but the buff wouldn't likely be big.

Caprivi strip would hold all but the giraffe and nyala, but the buffalo over 40" would be hard to do.

Zambia or Botswana would be the place for lechwe otherwise. Some of the Okavango areas that have lechwe also produce some nice 40-45" buffalo.

Zambia would have everything on a multi area hunt, but giraffe and nyala. The buffalo may not be that big either.

Girrafe you're looking at Zimbabwe or RSA probably.

Having hunted several areas in RSA, including some fenced, I will be the last to throw stones at any hunting activities in RSA, NZ, USA or anywhere.

However, if I am wrong about the red lechwe, please tell me. Are there free range, huntable, importable red lechwe in RSA or anywhere?

In the context of this thread, where a poster has been wanting to go to Africa "his whole life" and is inquiring about shooting buffalo and a host of other species, including lechwe, he deserves a better response than "for lechwe your choices are RSA or Zambia". My goal was to provide correct and complete facts. I meant no disrepect to the people or the lechwes of RSA.

How big is " free range " really? Is 150,000 acres, varied altitude from 3000-8000 feet, acceptable? Or do we need no fences all the way from Graaf-Reinet to Zambia to be "free"?

This one taken by my hunting partner in the Eastern Cape, July,2009.

[aussie, sorry for the hi-jack. Please PM if you would like more details!]

The ONLY areas with huntable populations of naturally occuring lechwe are the Caprivi of Namibia, the Okavango of Botswana, the Kafue of Zambia, and the Bangewelu of Zambia. That's it. Other areas may have them, but the're introduced. I'm not including the Nile of course as it isn't hunted and found in Sudan and wherever else it is.

Aussie,

If you take all animals on your wish list on your first safari then what will be the excuse for the 2nd?

Your wish list calls for multiple trips, each full with anticipation of making another piece of the dream come true, like piecing together a puzzle; although I hope the puzzle never gets completed thumb

If I were you, I would concentrate on the animal highest on my priority list whether it is a buffalo or a Nyala and plan my trip accordingly.
