For those who have hunted the Damara Dik-Dik, what chambering did you use? I will be in Namibia next year and have been debating on whether to add this species or not. (I ask now because additional arrangements and travelling would need to be organized.) I'd prefer to only bring one rifle and the other game on the list are considerably heavier. If I decide to hunt one, I'd like to do a full-body mount.

pinotguy, a solid out of most moderate velocity calibers works fine. Otherwise, ask your PH for a 22 LR to use. If your hunt is early season, you might even consider a 12 gauge shotgun, as their preffered habitat can be unbelievebly thick early season.

Well I used my drilling with 16ga buck but you said one gun so with that said I would use 338 WM and use barnes solids. I have used this combo on other pygmy antelope i e Klippy, Grysbok etc.

Thanks for the advice so far guys.

Karl - Is a .22 LR legally OK in Namibia? If it is, I have a bolt-action .22 LR that I could bring along. Had heard that rimfire rifles were not allowed in some African countries but can't remember if Namibia is one of those.

DOJ - I'm planning on taking an 8x68S so that's somewhat similar to the .338 WM. Are solids allowed in Namibia? I had heard that they were illegal for use on PG there.

Thanks again.

Solids are not legal for plains game in Namibia. This is much ignored. Don't believe a .22 lr has the kilojoules to be legal either.

You'll likely, as Karl indicated, hunt your Damara dik-dik in cover and get a 50-yard or less shot. Suppose you could use a very tough softpoint to be legal and hope not to touch bone for minimal damage, but it risks to make a mess and, as happened at my favorite game farm, the client had no prayer of a mount after his 300gr .375 SN mangled his pricey Damara dik-dik...

Tim, this is not true. We have an energy minimum for certain animals, but not for dik dik. Please also note that dik dik is not mentioned in subsection 1(b) and 1(c), so technically you may use a solid.
See below:

The following are from MET's (Ministy of Environment and Tourism, which regulates professional and other hunting in Namibia) reprint of the regulations, (Nature Conservation Ordinance 1975: No.4 of 1975.)

Restrictions in regard to firearms and capturing apparatus
42. (1) No person shall use a revolver, pistol or automatic fire-arm when hunting game or use a fire-arm of which the bullet has an energy at the muzzle of the barrel which is lower tahn the following when hunting the species of game indicated thereunder:
(a) 5400 joules: Buffalo
(b) 2700 joules: eland, kudu, oryx, wildebeest, hartebeest, all species of exotic game.
(c) 1350 joules: springbok, duiker.
Provided that the Cabinet may for the purposes of this subsection by regulation diffrenciate between the caliber of different fire-arms in respect of different game.
(2) No person shall when hunting the species of game mentioned in subsection 1(b) or (c) use cartridges with bullets commonly known as solids.

The shotgun works the best (#4 Shot) anything bigger will tear it up.

I took a .308 Win and a .375 H&H and between those two they should handle every huntable game in Namibia.

Karl,

Thanks for the correction! Looks as if they just left the little critters out, klipspringers and impala, too, by the look of it...

You hunt dik dik. Therefore, you can pick your load. I would load some solids or fmj's for your rifle at a very moderate velocity and get a scope setting for that load. You will be shooting no further than 100 yards. I'd zero for about 75 yards.

I shot mine with my back up rifle on my elephant hunt, a 415 Express using 400gr solids at about 2350fps. Rolled him right over. You can catch a picture of the full mount in Trophy Room Pics, under 2008 Edition of Trophy Room. I have a difficult time telling where the round exited. Kudude

I've shot all of my little critters, with the exception of Steenbok, with the .375 using solids. I wished that I had shot the Steenbok with it too, as it does very minimal damage to the small antelope.

I shot my steenbok with a .375 Ruger. My ph told me to hold farther back so I would have something left to mount. That was good advice, as it blew a hole I could put both fists through.

I recently killed a steenbok with my 9.3x74R with 286 Nosler Partitions. Hit him just behind the shoulders @ 120 yards. The round completely penetrated the large animal and left a very reasonable (small) exit in the body and slightly larger hole in the hide.

I did not feel as though I was underguned.

I'll take Karl's advice and go with the .22 rifle. I normally take a .223 as it does a great job without blowing a large hole.

I have much of the same delima. So, being you had this as your rifle choices which would you take:

17 HMR
204 Ruger
223
22-250
243 win (edited to include this caliber)
7mm-08
300 Win Mag

The 300 will be going anyway for the big stuff, but thought of taking a small rifle for klippie, steenbok and dik dik.

Good suggestions and sound advice from everyone. Much appreciated. I'll check with the PH as I'm sure he'll have something that's suitable. (I'd love to use an 8mm solid but I can't seem to locate any.)

graybird, I'd take the .17 only for varmints and Dik-Dik, and only for the Dik-Dik/Steinbok if the shot were under 75 yards and I had a solid (and I mean solid) rest and he was standing still and broadside. No exit hole and mush for the heart/lungs. The best caliber IMHO would be the 5mm Remington. No longer made by Remington but it is being introduced again by another company. This caliber is death on varmints and small game up to the size of Dik-Dik with rarely any pelt damage. Aside from the .17, if your 22-250 will shoot 60 grain Nosler Partitions, it will be perfect for any game up to the size of Springbok. Avoid any round that is fast expanding if you care about the trophy aspect.
