Die Ou JagterEARLY XMAS GIFT
Just got a call from my taxidermist (should have gotten month ago) he had a fire nov 10th. I lost Hippo skull, lion skull and hide, Sharpes Grysbok hide and Red Duiker hide.
Dallas has to be better.
I guess the sunny side is I now have reason to go back - like I needed one.

FishN4EyesDamn, that is a super-bummer!
My sympathies, that sucks!
But like you said, now you need replacements!

Does his insurance cover the cost of your animals (as in - hunt cost?)

Hunting For AdventureBummer for sure. That will be expensive to replace.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Die Ou JagterI don't know how the insurance will be. The part that really pisses me off was we had a contract that stated all of the mounts were to be deilvered to my office 9/28. They should have never been at his shop. I understand fires are accidental but my loss should have never happened.
He mentioned his insurance and mentioned something about replacement. Greg is this type of coverage included in taxidermist insurance i e the liability to clients for their total loss i e hunt costs etc.?

SBTThat would be terrible with any trophies, but a lion. I am so sorry for your loss.

MacD37Man that is a bummer! I know how you feel I had a house fire a few years ago and lost all my trophies except some antlers that were on our barn. Luckily the mounts I lost were mostly mule deer and elk with only two African mounts! I also lost my first rifle, and my grandfather's shotgun in that fire
The loss is devistating for sure!

I envy your spirit.

JBrownThe skins and skulls are gone, but you will always have the most important trophies: the memories.
It's still sickening, especially the fact that the fire took place after your mounts were supposed to be in your possession.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Sally's DadDang, that is sad to hear. Was it one of the local guys? I found a guy in Cresson who does really nice work, he even fixed my leopard after Trophaendienste and the shipping company made a mess of it. Really good guy to work with in case you need someone for the next round of trophies. Sorry this happened, I know you love the little guys. Have a better holiday!

Bill CVery sorry to hear, especially in regards to the lion. Was this the same taxidermist that you had been using for years (the guy who had the problems w/the Game Commission back in 04)? Was the cause of the fire investigated? Feel free to PM me, and again, sorry for the crap news that you should have been made aware of long before now. Bill

Die Ou JagterYea, I have used Russ for about 10 yrs along with Marcus Zimmerman who will get my next job - Chobe Bushbuck taken on last trip to Zim in Sept..
I talked with my PH and replacing the Red Duiker won't be so hard or expensive as I will be returning to Natal for Suni, but the lion and Hippo will be tough the hippo was hugh, but I have some boots from his hide for "trophy".
Life goes on.
Sally's Dad, SCI banquet comming soon. Going to have some nice hunts on auction. Mule and Cous deer in Mexico, Texas Whitetail , New Foundland Moose and Bear, Maine Bear and maybe a very good Whitetail in Illinois.
Thanks to all for your kind words and hope to see many in Dallas.

Hawkeye MountaineerGreetings, Ed- [aka Die Ou Jagter] in Bedford, Pa.
You have my condolences regarding the loss of the skulls and hides at your taxidermist's shop.
I'm sure that is a disappointment.
However, I do appreciate your "life goes on" / "Big Picture" perspective.
There was a family [kin of our friends] who lost EVERYTHING in a fire this week. They were blessed to have their lives, their pets and their pajamas.
I do hope the insurance helps you out... and that there is a chance for a re-accumulation of trophies!

NakihunterSorry to hear that. You are a very resilient man! Good luck with the insurance & next hunt.

Just got on the net and read about your loss. I am truly sorry to hear of this, dear friend.
All of us will have to do something to ensure you are of good cheer at DSC (now where is that case of scotch?).
