I was recently awarded 2 new areas in NW Namibia, namely Uukolonkhadi-Ruacana and Puros. U-R is very simmelar to Uukwaluudi, the other area I have up there, with the bonus that it has the Kunene river as a Northern boundary. Both U-R and Uukwalundi are mostly Western-Kalahari sand covered in scrub mopane, with small hills and pans that grows bigger as you continue North.
Puros on the other hand, is totally different, a true desert, but with loads of wildlife.
I thought AR members would enjoy some of the photos I took on a recent scout to the Puros area.

Not what you would expect in the desert, but actually plentyful, also on quota!

More typical what you would expect

Plenty of them around, even have a culling quota for them!

Same here...

Even kudu are present in this dry area.

Hope you enjoyed!

Great pictures and very interesting looking areas. Are these consessions/communal areas or ranches?

Manne!

That sounds lekker. Are Ruacana falls on your boundary?
Puros - isn't there a large community conservancy there?
Thats where Dr. Flip Stander has done much of his work on desert lions I believe.

Need an appy for a couple weeks this winter hillbilly

kayaker, yes Puros the "village" (around 250 people call this area home) is right in the middle of this area, and it is exactly where they have done the reseach on the desert lions. In fact, you have a great chance to see some of them, as well as these guys:

There are also a few desert elephant around.
Also, the Ruacana waterfall is on the boundary of the U-R concession.

Cazador humilde, all three of these areas are communal concessions, with Puros the largest, and Uukwaluudo the smallest.

Approxamate sizes are as follows:
Puros 880 000 acres (unfenced)

Uukolonkahdi-Ruacana 790 000 acres (unfenced)

Uukwaluudi 350 000 acres (of which 15 000 acres are fenced, the rest is unfenced.)

So that's why you asked me if I was feeling adventurous.

Very interesting looking place. Looks like I'd need to bring my long range rifles instead of my 375 H&H.

Looks like Angola but it s not because it has animals. The terrain looks exactly like that when we drove up to Foz de Cunene from Ruacana.
Very strange that we didnt see game excpet gemsbuck and springbuck but that was way out west from Ruacana.

I did however on our way back see some fresh kudu tracks on one of the small dirt tracks, as well as a 3 hornbills two parents and a young one. And a duiker or two running as fast as they could. But that was it for wildlife on the other side of the Cunene.

Frank, you will do fine with your .375 H&H, just maybe laod them with 270gr. Barnes TSX bullets, most shots will be under 250 yards, even in Puros. The other 2 areas are much more "vegetated", so there shots should be much closer.

Here is a shot of a black faced impala that I took last year in Uukwaluudi, notice the much thicker vegetation. (Unbelieveble, but these 2 areas are less than 150 miles apart...)

Thanks for the pics. Very interesting. I see it also has the Euphorbia bush but the terrain seems to host a few more trees and maybe a little more topo than Tsiseb conservancy.

Do you have any pics of the U-R concession?

Karl:

I think I saw in one of your other posts that you might put together a special cull hunt for this place. I'd be interested in something like that if it could happen before or after my 2009 Zim hunt.

Looks like a great place. Would you consider letting hunters tent camp while on a cull hunt?

That would be the only accomodation available to hunters...

Jorge, unfortunately I only have some trophy shots taken right on the border between Uukwaluudi and U-R. The terrain is simmelar, more rocky in U-R, and sandy in Uukwaluudi.

jorge, these picture should give you an idea of what the terrain looks like in U-R and Uu, the other 2 areas. (Both where taken in Uukwaluudi)Their annual rainfull is between 400 and 500mm per year, where Puros is less than 100mm per year (less than 4 inches...). The last picture was also taken at Uu, to illustrate the pans I am talking of.
