Thanks for the info

Expensive can be the trophy fee - but good meat is just plain good.

Headed for my fourth trip to Africa I have learned one lesson from my last three trips.

Shoot the damn animal with the best meat early in the safari and enjoy good meat for the safari for the rest of the time. Or hope someone else in camp shoots it.

Trophy size is nice and all but in my humble opinion is always dominated by meat/good protein.

For me the chef in camp is as important as the skinner.

Side note - never heard of anyone who hung eland for bait.

Quite a few SA PHs that migrate to this part of the world seem to find nothing wrong with it but when sharing camp with another PH from a different tribe are told it is a sacrilege and to shoot a zebra or whatever else instead for baiting purposes.

The eland carcass ends up on the table ... well, the choice parts do for sure. Big Grin

Rule of thumb, "anyone using eland for anything but table fare requires the services of a decent piece of woven hemp and a strong horizontal tree limb." Big Grin

Roan is great eating, on my first trip to CAR I was in a situation if you don't shoot you don't eat archer

fried Roan balls, kidneys, liver became a delicacy. we stewed the rump and made great kebabs with the fillet and loins,

was better than the Buffalo and Derby meat but not as good as the bush buck and oribi,
