At least two operations in Zambia list yellow backed duiker as an available species. Does anyone know how often they are actually taken by hunters in Zambia? Thanks.

That is a very cool animal that i would love to hunt !A yellow backed duiker can weigh over 150 pounds Eeker ..I have never seen a trophy photo with a y-b duiker from Zambia . I think someone on AR said they were closing Y-B Duiker in CAR or Cameroon this year ?

DISTRIBUTION The forest zone from Senegal eastward to southwestern Sudan and southward through Gabon, Congo (B), Congo (K) and southwestern Uganda to northern Angola and parts of Zambia. Also in the Mau Forest in southwestern Kenya, and may still exist in mountain forests on Mt. Elgon on the Uganda-Kenya border.

Interesting question and I'd like to hear the answer as well. I don't know if any one actually takes yellow backed duikers in Zambia, but I think they are there, in the north. Last year in Tondwa, the PH and I saw something strange dash across the track at last light. We both thought it was a yellow backed duiker. The reference books say they should be there and the previous concession holders thought there were some there as well. At the time however, they were not on quota in Tondwa.

They closed yellowback in Cameroon just before I arrived in June of 2008. Saw plenty of tracks while hunting.

The DuPlooy's did have yellow back duiker on their trophy fee list for Tondwa but I don't think they ever killed one. If I wanted to hunt one in Zambia I'd be asking a lot of questions of the opertor offering them.

I hunted in Kasonso Busanga in 2005 and saw numerous tracks while hunting blue duiker in the thicket/forest. To my knowledge they have not shot one recently but nobody seems to go there with YBD as a primary goal, too focussed on the Lion, sable, sitatunga and other game. With the right amount of time, effort and discussion with the PH pre booking the hunt i reckon you have a decent chance. I have not heard of any concession where they are "easy" to hunt. Contact Hunters & Guides Zambia, it is their concession and they are a very professional outfit.

What I've heard is pretty much in line with what Scott and Mark say. I've certainly not had anyone suggest that I go after them. I'm just curious to hear if anyone (apart from local meat hunters/poachers) has taken one in the country in recent years.

Fairgame/Andrew, I think I posted this topic before you were on the forum. Strictly out of curiosity, while I was at DSC this year, I talked with Richard and with Gavin Hume about the presence/availability of YBD in Zambia, and it's pretty clear they're not a realistic goal for the average foreign hunter on a multi-species hunt. From what I can gather, it's a trophy that might be taken on a fairly lengthy hunt with a singular focus -- but long odds would still be the rule. Also, it's not clear that any sport hunter has conducted such a hunt in recent years. Anything to add on this? Have you ever seen one in your years hunting in Zambia? Thanks.

For what's it's worth, we do not list them in our 2010 price list (Sable Safaris Zambia). Only the Common and Blue Duiker.

We did take a fair number last year (2009) in our Central African concessions. We had 11 on quota in CAR and harvested 8. We have them on quota for this year but it is now closed in Cam and may soon be everywhere. In Cameroon, no YB Duiker but we take Blue, Peter's, Bay and Red River Duikers.
Cheers,
David

Sandyhunter - You won't see one in Richard's area, trust me on that!!

They did shoot a couple years and years ago from his block, but no one has seen one in the past 10 years, that I am aware of. I have spent 15-16 weeks in Richard's area in the past 6 years, if they are there, they do a real good job of hiding.

Several of his guys have reported to him a sighting or two on occasion, or they say they know where they saw them in previous years, but they have certainly never shot one there.

Nice trophy, LDK. I hope I get the chance to visit CAR and take one before they're completely unavailable.

Aaron, that's pretty much what Richard told me in Dallas. I'm not thinking there's any chance of shooting or even seeing one -- just wondering if Andrew has ever seen one anywhere in the country, perhaps a while ago. Lucky you to get to spend so much time there!

Ironically, I emailed my Outfitter this evening to confirm we still have YB Duiker on quota for 2010. His reply:
"Yes we have still quota in CAR for this year.
Yes it is closed in Cameroon and maybe soon everywhere."

I'd say it's time to plan if one is interested in taking some of the choice Duiker's, and I won't mention those pesky LD Eland, Bongo, Lion, Leopard and Sitatunga Eeker

sandyhunter,

YBD do occur in the remote hinterlands and Richard put a client on one a couple of years ago. However they are very secretive and no hunter that I know of has spent time specifically hunting them. I have seen only one in 8 years but do see their tracks now and again.

The hunting of them is tedious and their haunts are in areas infested with tsetse and where most other game has been poached out.

Our trackers claim there are areas where they are fairly common but these are very distant from the main hunting area. Note the Lunga Luswishi concession that you will be hunting is vast - some 13,000 square kilometres and we only hunt about 10% of it.

Thanks, fairgame. Too bad it's not a better hunt. Still, it's nice to know that they're around, even if very rarely seen and never shot.

Andrew, can you guarantee me a gold metal one? Big Grin

If there is any animal I lust after, it is a Yellow Back Duiker, and I thought about going to CAR with just this as the main target. Shame those charter flights are as much as a good tuskless hunt!

Yes Bill I know a place that they occur in vast herds. Would you like to place a non refundable deposit?
