Ted Gorsline, who now is working in Uganda, has asked me to warn AR members that using dogs, salt, bait or bows and arrows to hunt sitatunga is illegal under that country’s game laws.

Gorsline said at least one U.S. booking agent is promoting hunts using dogs and bait for sitatunga in Uganda.

Ted is concerned that American clients could be jailed in Uganda or discover later they’re in violation of our Lacey Act when they return to the States with sitatungas that were taken illegally.

He said one of his clients recently shot the first legal Sesse Islands sitatunga in 45 years with him -- after 11 days of sitting on a machon.

If I remeber right there's been a couple taken now.. Isn't it Steve Kobrine who's been organizing these hunts?
I think at least Jim Shockey has shot one..

Good to see that Mr. Gorsline is still working. I believe he ran into trouble posting here some time ago and dropped off the site. Some kind of computer issue I think.

Oops. Ted did not say the sitatunga was taken on the Sesse Islands. This was my goof, and I take full responsibility and apologize.

He has since sent me a long note, and I've asked him for permission to post it here in its entirity. Charles Helm is correct. Ted was banned from posting on AR. I'm not certain of the reason.

I think at the time there was some dispute (by DRG perhaps) over whether he was banned or had problems with his computer. I believe he may have been in Germany at the time.

I enjoyed his hunting posts. He is on Steve Scott's new show from time to time, mostly old Kilombero footage I think.

What about the use of dogs? My understanding was this is a LEGAL practice.

Here is Ted's latest email to me. With it, I am backing out of this. -- Bill Quimby

Dear Bill,

I am just back from Uganda for an hour and Kaka tells me the shit has already hit the fan. No worries. The info I sent to you is accurate and what you posted is accurate except the sitatunga we got was shot at Lake Kacheerea and not on the Sesse Islands as you said in your e-mail.

But you have very definitely done American hunters a favour because they could get nailed under the Lacey Act.

The best independant source (not an agent) of info about the Uganda game laws is Nicky Blunt who hunted Uganda for years and who now lives in Scotland and it was he who first warned me about hunting with dogs because I assumed from the reports that have been posted that it must be legal. Nicki told me it was ilegal to hunt with dogs and Kaka only confirmed what Nicky had said.

I see on AR that Kathy Climes wants to see the sitatunga photo. I can get it but since I am banned on AR I will have to post it on another forum such as Nitro express.com.

Another one of our clients also got a 48.5 hard bossed old buffalo and I will ask him if we can post the picture. Its by far the best buffalo taken in Uganda since hunting re-opened.

VBR, Ted

Hunting with a bow is not illegal in Uganda.

The Wildlife Act vests authority in the Executive Director of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) as regards the limitations on arms/specifications/calibers to be used for hunting.

Since Uganda is just reopening sport hunting, many regulations are still not fully defined.

The Uganda Wildlife Act was rewritten in 2000, after the National Parks and the Game Departments were scrapped and replaced with UWA.

Old rules and regulations often have been modified or do not apply anymore.

There are no provisions for or against bowhunting. Therefore, UWA treats each request for a bow hunt on a per case basis, pending the publication of final guidelines.

Hunting with dogs is not allowed, most probably because this is one of the favorite hunting methods for many poachers.
