My battery is a 458 lott and 375 h&h. If I had to add a 3rd, it would be either a 416 rem to go in the middle or 505 gibbs on the ultra heavy end. Nevertheless, I think the 2 rifles I have will do everything I need them to do in africa

For me the 375 H&H or Weatherby and the much maligned 458WM can really do it all. A third is not neccesary.

My last two gun battery for primarily buff and some plains game was a 458WM and a 338WM. I would gladly carry that again for just about anything. My first 2GB was a 375 H&H and a 300Wby and it was perfect for plains game only. My next three gun battery if I every take that many will include a shotgun.

Carried two rifles last fall in Tanzania (not at the same time). .458 Lott and .375 H&H. Cape Buffalo & plains game. If either had broken, I would have still been fine.

I can't imagine why one would want to take three. Two which can do all the jobs for redundancy makes sense. But three????????

Light/Medium: 375 of some persuasion, or 416 Taylor
Heavy: 470 Mbogo

Only reason I'd consider a 3rd would be a shotgun for birding, or maybe something light, fast and flat for whacking sprinbok and baboon by the truckload.

Cheers,
Canuck

The problem of a 3 gun battery for me is not deciding which 3 to take but the fact that SAA won't allow you to carry 3 guns in a 3 gun case. So you either have to just take 2 or take an extra case (and pay extra for it).

So I defalt to my .375 H&H and my .458 WM. They are perfect for me. But if I could haul 3 in my 3 gun Americase, I would always take my .300 H&H or my .308 Winchester as a 3rd addition. If going for leopard, I would take either my .300 H&H or .308 Win as one of my primary guns. Cause they have bigger scopes with bigger objectives for precision shooting out of a blind at low light.

Oh, these are fun

The last time I took 3 guns it was:
.416 Rigby
.338 Win Mag
12 ga. O/U
This worked out great in Zimbabwe.

Since most airlines will not take 3 in a case anymore, my 2 gun battery would be:
7x57
9.3x62
if going light.

and if going after heavy game:
9.3x62
.450/400 3"

My two gun: 257 Weatherby Mag, 416 Remington Mag
However, on the trip I did with these I never shot the 257. I shot 7 plainsgame and a cape buffalo all with the 416.

So now I have a one gun battery...416 Rem Mag. At least when I go to Zim. When I'm in the bush with Jurassic Park like creatures I like the extra insurance.

If I were going to do three? 30.06, 9.3X62, and the 416 Rem Mag.

On my last TZ hunt (and my next one if the current crap doesn't kill it) I took 3 guns. Since I was hunting with my son, periodicaly we both needed to be armed and needed the "extra" rifle. Of the three, the .300 got the most use.

.300 WM
.375 H&H
.470 NE
