Elephant for first safari

I am exploring as many options as possible and have a few questions concerning a first time trip to Africa for Elephant. I know weight of the tusks is the standard measuring stick but I would prefer length and a nice curve so where would be my best bet? Is it possible to combine Kudu, Zebra and Warthog? Since they make such great reproductions of tusks is it legal or possible to sell the actual ivory either in Africa or the USA? Would a non -exportable bull be a good hunt (take lots of pics and good measurements and have tusks reproduced)? I don't want a night hunt though. Last question for the moment, is there any country where I could use a 9.3x62 for Elephant?

Remembered another question. How far in advance should you or can you book in advance? Is a cancellation hunt the way to go and how do you find them?

pacecar,

I usually get beat up for this but I think a hunter should book out at least a year before he wants to hunt. This allows the huntere to book the dates that are most likely to provide success for the animals they want and the dates that best fit the hunter's schedule. It also insures that the quota for the animals the hunter wants will still be availalbe on quota. Finally it gives you a little more time to organize your finances.

The other side of this is that often there are some short notice deals that come up. This can work fine if your work or personal schedule will let you leave on short notice and you have the necessary cash on hand. Another factor to consider is if you take a cancelation hunt which can be a very good deal financially is that you are taking the dates that worked for the original hunter that booked the safari not necessarily the best dates for the animals you want to pursue.

Hi

You cannot sell any ivory from hunting trophies!

The 9.3x62 is legal in Mozambique

Hope that helps

Thanks for the answers. I was pretty sure you could not sell the ivory in the US but it would be nice if you could while in Africa to offset the cost of the hunt. How do the hunts for non exportable elephants run?

CITES regulation makes it illegal to sell the ivory or any parts of sport hunted elephants worldwide. Sorry Smiler

Mozambique only have exportable elephant hunting!

cheers

you cannot import ivory from mozm. into the us. Go on a plains game hunt first. use the experience you gain for a hunt or 2 before attacking an ele. 9.3 if to light for ele.like mark says book at least a year out, preferably more than that if you want choice date & outfitter

So you couldn't buy someones mounted Elephant head or stool made from a foot? What about wallets or boots? Where do they get that leather?

I know everyone says if you go once you will go back but if I am only able to go once I would like to at least attempt to bring an Elephant to bag.

Obviously I would need to find a guide that is comfortable with my using a 9.3x62

it's a difference between sport hunted Cites quota and management / cull hunts Cites quota from them there is legal sales from time to time from parks who get a special trade quota from Cites.

AS an US resident you don't want to get involved with anything that could be viewed braking the Lacy Act!

butloc

Correct no importation of Moz Elephant to the US thanks to your USFW and the 9.3 is light but will work if the right bullets are used and the man behind knows what he is doing.

the original question was in which country the 9.3 was legal and if he could sell the ivory! I did not recommended the 9.3 nor told him to hunt ele MOZ.

IMO a PG hunt perhaps with a Buff for the first hunt would be better. tu2

Cheers
