Woo-Hoo! Great show today. Did you jump out of your chair when that Buffalo broke out of the bush six feet from the guy? He made a good shot, but it sort-of reinforced my preference for a good DR in the thick stuff. When the bull turned right, the PH did not even have time to take a shot. That's footage you tape and replay a couple times.
Two really good bulls, and a pretty nice Elephant. This young man stayed cool, and made his shots.

Another really worthwhile show gentlemen!

Do you think that the hunter should have been able to get off a shot as well when the bull charged?

I saw it and thought it was the best episode yet. What a hunt!

I wasn't paying real close attention, but I thought the PH was the one who got the shot when the bull charged.

I believe is was the same show.... Did anyone catch when the client said that he had wanted to hunt dagga boys, but his PH told him that the "dagga boys will still be with the herd this time of year."

I thought dagga boys keep to themselves year-round for the most part? Anyone have any insight on this?

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

The PH shot the buff then made the shots on the follow up. The hunter made the 5th or 6th shot after the buff was down.

The hunter did make a great shot on the ele.

Did anyone notice that on the elephant the first shot gave the typical reaction of a successful frontal brain shot but that the elephant rolled over on the insurance shot. Another sign that a brain shot doesn't always kill an elephant.

I figured it was the wallop from the shot that knocked him over. It was a pity as he was set up for perfect photos. I'd be interested to hear from the experts on this.

I noticed that also. At first I figured that the first shot may have been a near miss and the insurance shot killed it. Then I wondered if a CNS hit on a dead elephant could have caused a nerve reaction that caused it to roll over.

I did question why the insurance shot was not to the heart.....

BTW I think all this talk of brain shots not killing is a new phenomenon and coincides with a lot of newbies going over to Africa and flubbing brain-shots on elephants. I'm not saying guys are making excuses for poor shooting, but....

Jason,

I shot a tuskless cow last month. The bullet entered the head above the ear slit due to a very unusual angled upward shot. The elephant gave the typical, raise head and trunk reaction. Then crashed to earth. We went after a potentially wounded second elephant and returned about 15 minutes later. The first elephant was down but groaning and feebly moving her trunk. A finisher was administered and we took the head back to camp and sawed it in half down the middle after skinning. We traced the first bullet path from entry through the brain cavity and the hind brain and out the far side of the brain cavity. No doubt, 100% rear brain shot, yet this elephant lived for over 15 minutes.

Happens to humans shot in the head or having massive head injuries from trauma. Takes the involuntary muscles some time to realize the central processor is off line.
