I want to hunt baboons in Namibia and what is the best rifle for killing them? I have Steyr Mannlicher 243 Winchester rifle which I think will be sufficient.

Do you like hollow point bullets. I like the Sierra 60g hollow point. Will that bullet work good for baboon.

If those Sierras shoot well in your rifle I'm sure they would be fine, placement is more important than caliber, and your .243 is close to ideal.

I have shot a few baboons in my day, and I love to shoot them! At all times I have used the rifle or even handgun I had in hand at the time. I have used 35 Whelen, 45/70, 358 STA, 338 Winchester, 45 Colt in Win 94 and Taurus light weight, 45 ACP, 416 Remington, and probably some more, but those come to mind right now. All did a fine job. It does not take a miracle cartridge to do in a baboon. Lot's of things would do well from 223 right on up from there.

I was thinking recently about this, from the other thread on this subject, and what I thought would do best for me is a 6.5 WSM built on a little heavier rifle than my current featherweight WIn M70. I sent a rifle up to SSK this week to have built. Win M70 6.5 WSM, 24 inch barrel at or around .750" at the muzzle. I am fitting it with two stocks--Win Ultimate stock and a Accurate Innovations stock I have on hand. I can run a 120 gr bullet just a tad over 3300 fps and that should make a dandy baboon rifle!

I just got back from a hunt in Zimbabwe. I used my .300 Jarrett on the 16 baboons I shot with 180 grain Sierra loads. It seemed to work well although you can use just about anything. I used my 6.5mm x .284 last year for a 1000 yard shot on a baboon. It rolled him right off a cliff!

I can't imagine taking a separate rifle just for baboons. I might want something small so I can pack more ammo.

A rifle of small to medium caliber that you shoot accurately. A 5 mm will take one with no problem if you hit it in a vital area, but realistically, your .243 is more than enough.
Cheers,
David

If I wanted a dedicated rifle for shooting nothing but baboons it would be my MCA Mannlicher Shoenauer rifle chambered for 243 Win with a 100 gr Hornady sp @ 3000 fps With a 3x9x40mm scope! That rifle is like an extention of my eye down range, and kills like the hammer of Thor on big western Muledeer! A bull baboon is in trouble if I can see him with that rifle in my hands! dancing

This is a silly thread. Every police department has experience in this area. Just look at the guns that they carry.
