Hey, I'm getting ready for my first safari. I'm not planning on killing anything crazy, just the usaual. I plan on getting a warthog, 2 impala, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, and a blesbok. On average from everybodies experience what should I be expected to pay once I kill these animals? How much is it going to cost to get these animals back to the states?

I went to RSA in April of this year. My PH took me over to Trophex to price the Taxidermy work.
It is supposed to be much less expensive to have the work done there, if you deal with a reputable firm. They quoted prices about a third or a bit more less than here. The advantage is that the mounts can be shipped with about one third the hassle of raw hides and skulls.
You have to be able to trust your PH to take care of you. My PH is going to drive over in November when the work is done and ready to crate and ship. He will let me know if everything is good to go.

So, you might look at them. www.trophex.co.za or Email tzimbi@lantic.net and check.

cactus,

i am currentlyhaving some trophies, raw skins and horns being shipped to Chicago and on to my taxidermist. The animals include an eland, african wildcat, steenbok, gemsbok, Kudu. The bill, including $18K in insurance came ot $918.

While it is certainly cheaper, in most cases, to have the taxi work done there, the increased shipping charges do make most of the savings moot.

As for dip/pac charges, these vary widely, and I generally plan for $100 per critter, which is a high estimate, but I'd rather guess high than get walloped!

For dip/pack, use $100 per animal.....more for additional skins beyond a cape.
Transport varies a lot on final packed size and weight....I just spent $3k for air transport from Jo'burg to central Mich, with insurance.
I did have a buff skull/horn and ele tusks in that shipment.

Run from 1K raw skins to around 3K for finished work. Also with the wart hog it has to be shipped to a USDA approved Taxidermist will have to debug warthog (swine)..

Do not forget to include customs broker fees to get your mounts, horns, skins, etc through US customs. My plainsgame bag was similar to yours and I was shocked when the bill was presented to me to clear customs of almost $2,000!!! Dip/pack, taxidermy, shipping were all prepaid. ~$2,000 just to clear customs!

After that nightmare I vowed that photographs would be good enough mementos.

Steer clear of WESCO Shipping Co of New York.

onefunzer2, you got screwed! My son and I had finished euro mts and capes, plus 1 shoulder mt. kudu shipped back from RSA to Chicago. We used the girls at D+L CBH, in Elk Grove, to do the clearing. All in, it was $425 to clear the whole crate, and ship it to my home town, in Indiana. This was just last April.

Of course I got screwed. But I didn't get the option of what customs broker to use. My PH's company made all the arrangements. I was going to pick it up myself at the Port of Elizabeth, NJ to save on truck freight to my PA home. So I told WESCO to shove the shipment, I was not about to pay their ransome.

As it turned out I did pick up my hunting partner's crate. He couldn't even make European mounts from his skulls cause they were brittle from overly long boiling. A cluster f**k all around.

For skulls/horns/capes from a "normal" safari, plan on $2,000 for dip/pack/ship and something in the neighborhood of $200-500 for Customs clearing (which is really a total scam and if you have a good taxidermist that does African stuff a lot, use them and have them use their choice of company to clear the shipment).

The bad deal with dip/pack is, your skulls will need to be reboiled by a USF&W/USDA approved facility (taxidermist or tannery). However, as mentioned, the savings you may find in African taxidermy are lost on shipping/crating charges. My lion shipping alone cost me right at $3,000.

Cactus,

I agree with Dan. I think about $100 per animal is what you'll pay for Dip/pack. My rough guestimate is that you need to budget at least $2,000 for shipping.

Last January I had a crate shipped to me in Anchorage from RSA. The total including clearning was $2400. The crate was 4'x4'x6'

In the crate was the following
Pedistal kudu and base
warhog mount
impala mount
bushbuck mount
duiker table pedistal
eland skull
3 warthog skulls
impala skull
asorted back skins
eland flatskin
zebra rug
6' tall giraff carving

I cleared it all myself in about 30 min.

What a lot of people forget is they charge for dip/pack as well as shipping. The total is the same as having full mounts sent over. Maybe I was screwed on my first trip? I paid $600 for dip/pack and another $1100 for shipping.

Turns out the shipping for mounted animals is about the same as dip/pack/ship of flat skins and horns. The money I saved on taxidermy was nearly enough to go on another hunt.

cactus, and one other thing. as of a few years ago, it quite legal to ship rawe skins via ocean freight instead of the old law that just allowed air freight. Ocean freight will save you a fair amount of dollars and only takes about 14 days longer to get here.

yes, I know, Ocean freight has a few inherent issues like moisture. But, if the packer is diligent, there are no issues except a complete capsize or loss of freight.

Get esitmates from a few different shippers, or have the ph/taxi do it over there. Choice is good.

My seven animals, buff, waterbuck, bushbuck, sable, impala, wildebeest and zebra cost ALL IN right at $4,000 to the tannery in Texas from Zim. Yeah, a rip for sure. From all I have read, I think I won the prize for most paid. dancing

I have been using a quality RSA taxidermist for years...small shop, personally attends to each animal and his locals have been with him for years and have it down. While shipping is more for finished animals, I still save up to 30% of what area USDA/FWS approved import taxidermist charge.
I have used him on animals from TAN and ZAM also but may have to stop that---RSA just came up with a new revenue generator. The government charged an exorberant import fee on this years shipment from Zam to my RSA taxidermist.
Since I live several hours from import airport of Atlanta, I use Coppersmiths to clear my animal shipments. They have always been very helpful, cordial and reasonably priced.

in answer to your original question-TOO F==KING MUCH!!!!!!!!!!. these charges are the most exorbitant rip off in Africa and will probably as much or more than the taxidermy work costs. if your hunt is not in RSA, by the time you pay to get it from Zim, Moz, Nam, to RSA for transshipment to the US, IT WILL LIKELY BE WELL OVER $1500- then figure at least that much to get it to the US. and those are conservative estimates. makes me glad my trophy room is full and from now on, nothing but pictures come home.

jdollar, what happens to the trophy heads and skins not brought back? i.e. as you suggest only photos and of course great memories. I'm not into collecting trophies so when I get to Africa it will only be photos, personally I would sooner spend the money saved on taking more animals. Do you get treated any differently if not interested in taking trophies out?

I took 7 animals. Had one flat skin and 6 euro mounts. Cost to do this in SA was about $1200. Shipping was another $1000. I cleared customs myself. $50 and about 2 hours of my time.
