I want a good sable and another buffalo but the sable is the main thing. Where should I go and who with?

Harry,
I hunt quite alot in Zambia with the DuPlooy's, great outfit. They have a GMA in extreme northeast Zambia up by the south side of lake tanganika. It is Sable, Roan and Sitatunga. They are 100% on sitatunga, I shot a 44 inch sable there in August this year. No buffalo or cats but plenty of stuff to shoot. Mark Young on this forum books for them. I can without hesitation recommend the Duplooy's (Muchinga Adventures)

Harry,

The answer to your question is all dependent on how important the size of the sable is. In the NW of Zim historically your chances of taking a 40"+ sable on an unfenced concession are very good on the right area. I hunted the Forestry Area of Ngamo Sikumi last year and took a 45.25" bull the first day. That is not the norm but shows you the potential there. Because you can book these hunts usually on a ten day schedule they become quite economical compared to a sable plus whatever safari elsewhere in Africa. You can find a big sable in other places in Zim but the NW, Matetsi, Hwange area I think are far more consistent. We have one operator there that did not shoot a sable under 40" in '08.

Matetsi Unit 4 with www.huntersandguides.co.za, you will have a good chance at getting a 40+ sable and a good hard bossed 38" buffalo. Zambia is very good but the downside is that you need to buy a Classic licence for Sable and unless you hunt a Kafue block or private land you will need to hunt 2 different areas.

This is one of the Sable we saw while I was with Nyala Safari www.nyalasaf@mweb.co.zw hunting the Sukimi on the border of Hwange. I did not see Buffalo over 38 to 40 but there were lots to choose from and we only hunted them for around 4 days.

We saw over 100 sable a day on The Woodlands about 25 miles out of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Mine was 40"+, the other hunter in camp earlier shot a 41"+. The PH was talking about a 43"+ and a 45"+ that were taken in earlier hunts this year. I hunted with African Silwane Hunters and would recommend them.

Mark's comments are correct.

Just got back from Moz. with Bahati Adventures. saw over 100 sable each day, including 2 different herds of over 100 animals each. plenty of buff in the swamp as well as lots of plains game including Lichtenstein hartebeast normally found in Tanzania and 3-4 of the pigmy antelope. great area and pretty much a slam dunk for a good sable/buff.

Common or Roosevelt Sable? Buffalo requirements? I would want to know your goals before recommending where. You are welcome to email or call me.

Thanks for all the answers. Most appreciated.
Common sable.
Any good buffalo will do. The sable far more important to me. I have a buffalo so any more are just extra icing on the cake.

Mims, I'm going in 2010 to hunt the Save Conversancy for Buff and Sable, assuming Zim is still there by then Wink

How's life? Any good deer coming out of West Texas yet?

Harry,

jdollar is correct about the numbers of sable in Mozambique on Coutada 10 with Bahati. You will literally see hundreds as they are one of the most common animals there. Buffalo also occur in big numbers and offer a unique hunt on the Delta.

Good numbers of Sable in Moz and Zim where your potential for 40+ bull is greater. I can emial you some recomendations for you on Common Sable and Buff hunts if you like. I have 2 outfits that I can highly recommend.

Thanks

Harry,

I think the best sable in the world are found in Mulobaesi and Kafue East and West in Zambia. Have to hunt with Swan/Scan for 14 days. Expensive but absolutely first class.

Saw some huge sable in Mulobesi, Zambia but alas I couldnt afford to hunt them. The buffalo there are a late season deal after the water in the park dries up.
