Do any outfitters in Africa offer hunts on foot were you backpack in all your gear and hunt from small spike camps?

If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

Marshall Smallings was offering a Roosevelt type safari a year or two ago, advertising in Dakota's magazine. He's in Tanzania, an American, and his partner was a guy named Ballentyne. I don't know if they're still in business, because I would imagine there were few takers because most people don't have the time and money to be out for a couple of months.

I last saw him on the Kilombero River in the Selous in 2006. I have no idea how to contact him. Maybe someone else would.

You might find success with an inquiry to Rich Tabor, a Zim PH. Rich and I spoke of how attractive a backpack hunt beyond the last road in Chewore South would be.

We walked far enough beyond the last road that we were walking by 55" kudu at 40yds while they looked at us, wondering what we were. Same with duiker and klipspringer and some impala, etc.

We were lookng for eles and the recovery of game was an issue, but if your eating what your shooting and just recovering antlers, etc, that should be do able.

Contact Rich directly: richt@zol.co.zw

He is hunting right now and not due back for something like a month. His wife will check his emails. If you tell them John Kirlin suggested that you look Rich up Rich will probably recall our conversation - Sept '06.

Here you go.

I bet there are a number of other PHs that would be willing to do this so long as the client is up to it and understands the effect on success. Yukon Delta discussed a backpack buffalo hunt with his Zim PH last year.

Thanks Charles, but after one glance my wife said "fuck no you're not headed off to the bush with her!"

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

A safari of 10-42 days will cost from 30.000 US$ to 180.000 US$ all-inclusive.
And I would suspect that "all-inclusive" is not as inclusive as one might hope.

I noticed someone mentioned above that Ballantine and Smalling were offering walking hunts in Tanzania. I can tell you first hand that Jay Ballantine is a crook. He stole $50,000 from a buddy of mine for an elephant hunt that was supposed to last 21 days in the Kigosi Game Reserve. Jay was the PH, he did not know the area, we spent 5-6 days driving around in circles getting lost. Jay fell out of the truck during the hunt, and fell asleep during the hunt. The typical hunting day was from 8AM - 4PM then back to camp.

His wife dictated the times we would leave and return to camp because she did not want to be in the dark at the camp alone. I spotted more game than Jay did, he misidentified a herd of sable as buffalo, he was unsafe with his firearm, he refused to even look at elephants we spotted, we found 2 buffalo and he blew a stalk on them by fumbling around with a double rifle he did not know how to operate.

He was also supposed to bait for a leopard which he never did. The guy is completely incompetent. It was a hopeless disaster which Jay admitted in camp before he signed a promissory note to refund my friend's money. So after approximately 6 days we left.

The area was fine because Wendell had a client in there at the same time that was successful. I am convinced the PH was at fault.

If anyone doubts my story for any reason I will gladly provide court records for the case my friend filed against Jay and won. These include voice recordings of Jay admitting he owed my friend a refund. The court awarded my friend $50,000, all court costs, plus interest. Jay was found to be 100% at fault. The lawyers have begun collection proceedings.

The only "walking" safari Ballantine is capable of is possibly a stumble to the crapper.

My friend made a BIG mistake hiring Jay Ballantine, don't do the same.

This is a perfect example of why I never book my clients with outfitters I haven't personally inspected.

Todd

There was/is? an outfit called Buffalo Safaris based near Kariba, certainly in 2000. The guy who ran it was called Craig, a PH. They had some rondavels and pool and campsite, as well as a houseboat across the lake at Matusadona They did canoe trips on the Zambezi (how I knew them)and did photo safris too. They also did backpacking safaris but I never spoke to Craig about whether these were hunting or justing hiking.

Anyone got any knowledge??

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Like I said, "a guy named Ballentyne". Not a reccommendation at all. I'd never heard of him, before or since, until now.

Two or three come to mind: Gordon Duncan of Doma Safaris has a large concession with lots of hills; Glenn Stockil of Shaangan Hunters, who operates in the save conservancy and Cam Greig who writes for african hunter and hunts in cameroon, I think, can all put together all the slogging you can handle. I know Gordon and Glen and can assure you that what they promise they can and will deliver.
