. I have just received a 1966 copy of `Use Enough Gun` printed by Lowe & Brydone in mint condition bar a few pencil markings and a library stamp. Also purchased a uncorrected proof of `Uhuru` from 1962. Airplane reading for my upcoming trip! I did not know Ruark died at such a young age due to alcohol! . I think if "Use Enough Gun" is the first book of Ruark's that you will read you will enjoy it. Otherwise, you may remember some of the material from other books. It was published after his death and is more of a "greatest hits" collection in my opinion. Still good stuff but best when read before his other published works.

Use enough gun was my first ruark book and still my favorite to date. I somehow read it after my first safari, and within the first few pages it felt as if my own thoughts had been put to paper. I knew right then ruark expierenced the same Africa I had and was a true hunter.

I actually started rereading Uhuru 2 weeks ago. While not so much a hunting tale as a historical fiction novel I found it very enlightening regarding the late 50's/early 60's period in Kenya. It is a shame that nobody has done any audio book presentations of Ruarks titles. I have all of the Hemingway books in that form and find myself listening to my favorites of his works every few years and never grow tired of them. Listening to a good audio book on a long road trip or 18 hour plane ride helps the time pass much quicker.

That will be a great read! Where are you headed Charles? I think in one of his books he described his drinking habits and reading this I was actually surprised he made it to 49....

I got a copy of Uhuru in a house dispersal in Dar es Salaam 30 years ago. There were certainly a lot of the old Kenya hands at that time in the Muthaiga Club and Dar Yacht Club well remembered Mau Mau. Bloody hell - they are probably all dead now!

. My parents, both now gone, emigrated from England to Nairobi in 1954, in the peak of the Mau Mau problems. An uncle was there also and was with the Parks. Towards to end of the troubles my father picked up some 15 arrows recovered in a raid against the Mau Mau, the heads made from 3 inch nails, which I still have today. I have them as a wall display in our house. Nasty things. I can still recall the odd story told by my parents about dining at home with a revolver on the table and a shotgun propped against the wall. Another world. . "Up the ladders and down the snakes!"

Sounds like my house, maybe not so much for necessary safety but there is always shotguns in corner next to my night stand, sig 9 mm on night stand and rifles and shotguns in all the rooms in the house ( not paranoid, just “ in case” ) as I live in the sticks Never been lost, just confused here and there for month or two
