It was nice ot see Tony and Johanan do a tribute show to Johanan's long time tracker Mobuto. This is part of the reasons I really like Tony's show. The man was only 40 yrs of age. They did not say what he died from.

It was a very good show. Quite out of the ordinary for a hunting show. I really enjoyed the show - though "enjoyed" may be the wrong word. Chuck

Excellent episode, especially when Tony and Johan visited his village and grave. I liked when Tony put the "Fanta" on his grave and explained when they would return from a long track how he would always want a Fanta. The village really seemed to appreciate Johan and Tony paying tribute. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

This was a good show in many ways. Above all it shows the humanity in hunting and speaks to the primal connection of man and animals and how the very nature of hunting has helped to shape humanity itself in many ways. It is a true shame that the antis do not see this and would not care. Sure makes one think.

I wonder if anything more substantial was left to the family to commemorate the passing of this man who gave so much towards the successful production of the shows, other than the bottle of "Fanta"?

fujo I take it you're a glass half empty type guy. Who knows what was done behind the scenes? Did you expect to see Tony or Johan open up their wallots on TV & start handing out cash? Now that would have been tastless from two gentleman who seem to be good decent men. Charitable giving is suppose to be PRIVATE, not done in the open for all to see. May Maburu rest in peace. Ed: Great post ..... thanks for mentioning the show. I love this show, & this one was very moving. I, too, appreciate these two great hunters for what they did for their friend. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

It was a wonderful tribute. I wish more hunting shows would endeavor to show more of the human interest side of hunting. . . . and the hunter home from the hill. Mike

Cecil: You would be surprised at how some of these good folks are sometimes quickly forgotten. Funny how one never hears of any such tributes being mentioned in recognition of the fallen trackers - just relief funds for injured or killed PHs. I do not recall having mentioned any name in particular just "anything more substantial was left to the family" which could have come from anyone. Guess a bottle of Fanta is better than a kick in the crotch - hope it was a cold one! Rest in Peace Maburu the Big White Bwana has made good.

By what standards would you measure "substantial"? Substantial in terms of the tracker's normal pay, in terms of the PH's normal pay .......

fujo Maburu was a TRACKER, they made a whole show HONORING him! By the emotions shown, I personally took them to be genuine. As for what if anything was done beyond that is none of mine nor your business! You say you do not recall metioning any names, come on, there were only 3 people mentioned in this thread & 1 of them is the deceased, who else could you have possibly been talking about? As far as the bottle of Fanta, that was symbolic & I for one can see no harm in it whether it was cold or hot! As for your comment "rest in peace Maburu the big white bwana has made good." How do you know that they haven't? Now go ahead & take your cheap shots, you seem to be a pro at it. LORD, let my bullets go where my crosshairs show. Not all who wander are lost. Gee, did your Mom not love you growing up? Found a mouse turd in your Cheerios? Some folks just seem to go through life looking for things to be critical of . . . sheesh. You must have forgotten about this thread earlier this season. Look at Buzz's post on June 8 where a group of clients came to together, without the need to make a public appeal, to raise money for an injured tracker. That group raised thousands of dollars to help pay for medical expenses and offset lost revenues. And I am pleased to report the tracker is doing quite well. http://forums.accuratereloadin...121058571#2121058571 Mike

During my only safari in Africa, it was apparent that my PH and his trackers had a very close relationship. My PH refered to them as "his boys" and the trackers refered to the PH as "Pappa". It was like a father-son relationship. Thruout the safari, my PH was constantly concerned about the safety and welfare (food, water, clothing, blankets, medication, etc.) of his trackers. Fujo was my PH in 2009. Unlike many other PHs that I have had, he treated the trackers as key members of our team. I have had some PHs treat trackers like they know nothing. Fujo treated them as equal to himself - and not afraid to ask for their advice. I count that as a big reason for our success on that hunt.

I think it needs to be stated for those on AR that do not get to watch Under Wild Skies that they did not wait until Mabu, as they called him, died to honor him. He was always being bragged on for his skills & the way he handled himself. They often spoke about Mabu's skills making the hunt a success. It seemed to me that it was a 3 person show: Tony-Johan-Maburu. He was a respected member of their team & not someone they will forget anytime soon. LORD, let my bullets go where my crosshairs show. Mabu died of cancer. It had nothing to do with his tracking duties for Johan Calitz. I take Johan and Tony at their gentlemen's word, namely, Mabu was their close friend and admired hunter. The fact that they flew hundreds if not thousands of miles out of their way to honor him says something. Their feelings seem plenty genuine to me.

I might add to this thread, that the folk at Safari Classics raised a large sum of money for the family of fallen PH Owain Lewis, and unless you monitor the AR forums no one would know. It is reported that Johan spends $ 1million a year on diesel fuel and related expenses to pump water for the eles to survive. Those who need to have alight shone on their charitable works are doing them for the wrong reasons.

Tony and Johan are both the real deal, folks, the real deal. And, Under Wild Skies is one of the best African Hunting shows on T.V., bar none. Julius Maburu (Mabu) was also the real deal, and one of the best trackers in Africa. It says a lot about those two men to have them pay such a tribute to their good friend. I salute them wholeheartedly for their gesture in doing a show like this.
