A few years back, I went to an upscale Scotch bar in Scottsdale, AZ to get educated on the finer points of Scotch drinking. The barkeep described the smoky, rich, delicate tastes of the various scotches. Right.....to me it was like the difference between gasoline, kerosene or diesel. I just could not get it. Maybe growing up along the Mexican border and drinking to much tequlia years ago altered my taste buds. You folks that enjoy scotch can have my portion. A nice G & T around the fire after a great day of hunting suits me just fine. Enjoy!!!

I could understand that to some extent if you were drinking it neat or with ice....... You only get the full range of subtle flavours when you add a little (25-50%) good quality water. That said, I never understood tequila until a lady client mixed me a proper margarita.

I'll take a bottle of Bushmills single malt over scotch any time, but if I'm slumming I am partial to Mcallan 18 year old. Laphroaig only in the winter, preferably during a raging snowstorm.

I would suggest that these inflated priced bottles are for export only. Its common knowledge single malt goes back in condition after approx 25years (for drinking) As an investment for its rareity another story.jc :coffee

When I hunted hill stags way up in the north of Scotland a few years ago, the outfitter (Mike McCrave, the Man in the Kilt) brought along his registered tour guide for the after-hunt excursions, and this fellow happened to be a serious scotch connoisseur. He told me that paying extra for anything more 12 year old scotch was mostly a waste of money; the flavor that's leeched from the barrels can only reach a certain level--and the 18 and 20 year old stuff wasn't worth the extra $$$. He rated the top three scotches as: Cardhu McCallan Glenfarcus Cardhu runs $40-$50 in local liquor stores and that's what I drink, when I can afford to splurge a little. Chris, Mate, it burns like flame going down your throat and then makes your legs go numb so if anything, it probably cures piles by burning them away and cauterising the wounds!

My father-in-law made me a scotch drinker. McCallan was his scotch of choice so, naturally I'm hooked on that but, branching out. Just prior to my retirement from the Army the soldiers were questioning my drink of choice. I told the older you become the better, finer things in life you will enjoy. Don't get me wrong... I still enjoy my beer and bourbon but, scotch is my drink of choice. My first trip to Africa was in in 2010 but, I truly enjoyed the scotch at the evening fire pit. MSG, USA (Ret.) Just returned from a Scotland trip and we did a few makers tours. I found High land Park (12 yr and 18 yr)to be smooth straight up. Brought a bottle of 18 and 25 year old stuff home with me. Also "Old Pulteney" Was very good and i need to find a bottle for my wife. It was smooth and very good. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> "You've got the strongest hand in the world. That's right. Your hand. Exactly my taste as well. But instead of a good Cuban Cigar to go with it, I prefer a good english tobacco in my pipe after a day of safari! Mixes well with Mopani smoke! 12 weeks and counting for me.

Steve, come on mate. You're not giving whisky enough credit. What single malt are you finding for less than $30 a bottle? I recall Fairgame letting us know he would reimburse us for any bottle of whisky we brought with us so long it was less than 12 years old. I told him that was borderline pedophilia and told him the bottle of Oban was on me. Not that 14 years is that much different. George "...Africa. I can see now why Scotch came from Scotland. When bunch of Scots running around with nothing but skirts on come up with idea of making some kinda drink? Well, that is answer right there. Traditionally they don't wear anything under the kilt, which reminds me of the old story about the lady who sauntered up to the kilted Scotsman & asked: Sir.... Do tell me, what's worn under the kilt? And the Jock replies: Madam. Nuthin' is worrrn underr the kilt. Everythin' is in purrfect wurrkin' orrder!
