I'm going on my first trip to Africa (South Africa) this June. I've found this site to be very useful in preparing for my trip. One question is bullet selection. I'll be hunting Gemsbok, Impala, Springbok, and Zebra. I'll be taking a .300 WSM. For Whitetail and Mule Deer, I've been shooting the 180gr Federal Accubonds. While I'm sure there are better bullets for Africa, does anyone recommend not using the Accubonds?

allen - I have taken a 300 WSM to Africa on three occasions as my light rifle and have harvested all the animals and then some that are on your list with it. I personally opt for the 180gr Nosler Partitions. Both the Accubond and the Partition shoot extremely well in my Kimber so accuracy would not be an issue. The protected point on the Accubond is a definite plus since the nose on my Partitions do take a beating. I see no real reason to not use what works for you. Go for it and have a great time in RSA!! Properly applied the 180 Accubond will work perfectly. MARK H. Congrats on your first trip and welcome to the AR forums! It sounds like you already have confidence in your rifle and those loads so use them over there. It's basically the same kind of game you're used to shooting already although the zebra can get pretty heavy. On the larger game, I would consider the lung shot instead of your standard shoulder placement. _______________________________

That load will work just fine. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Have not used Accubonds but if I were going half way around the world, I would not opt for a bullet that I had to ask about..I would simply use Nosler partitions as I know, without asking that it would work... I believe, considering the cost of Safaris today that everyone should use a super premium bullet, cheap insurance IMO.. If you like shooting the accubonds stay with it. I have used Barnes TSX out of my .300 wsm on my last few trips and they have performed flawlessly. The bullet preformed as advertised and tracking on all animals was less then 50 yds. Enjoy the hunt, you will be forever ruined. The danger of civilization, of course, is that you will piss away your life on nonsense

I use 160 grain Accubonds and have taken everything from Duiker to Wildebeest, Whitetail Deer to Red Stag. Ranges of 100+ yards to over 300 yards. IMO, they are an outstanding big game bullet. If your rifle likes them, there will be no plains game in Africa that can resist its killing power. You do your part, the bullet will do its part. Have a great trip.
