TAA/Ruger Infomercial today...

I've finally seen an episode of TAA that was boring. Never thought that would happen. "Hi, we're the Ruger Management Team, and we're in Namibia.". Two of the bigwigs sounded as if they didn't know what model rifle they were shooting, or what cartridge it was chambered for. They did know the bullet weight though. Nice throw-in at the end, shooting a leopard out of a tree with a dog pack under it.
Solid thirty minutes, if you are into infomercials, with commercials.

sad, sad, sad...

Rich: I agree, this was a boring & disappointing episode. Hopefully we won't see any more like this one. Oh well, with all the great shows in the past, I'll let this one slide.

This weeks show was a re run, saw it a few months back, UGH!! The production was as good as always, good video of the animals and scenery, just way too much Ruger. Hopefully they got all this out of their system and it's back to bigger and better things?

Plus, this was PG hunt. Not too much drama when sneakng up on a blue wildebeest, red hartebeest or springbok.

I am actually really happy to see more plains game hunts. I think the ammount of BS and drama in dangerous game hunts is really getting old.

Craig is a good guy, and does a good job of not hyping it too much. I like Marc Watts I think he's a good guy, but his concept of dramatization is over the top.

Nice to see some plains game hunts.

It wasn't the animals hunted, although they could have shown more stalking. I just got back from a plains game hunt, and it was fantastic. This was just, as one person put it, all new clothes. They didn't even take any time to discuss the Ruger 375/416 or the RCM's concept and perceived advantages for the hunter. It all looked awkward and contrived.
This is the ONLY one I would not record and have in my library to see over and over again.

Well, the episode referenced may not be up to every persons expectation but still beats the shows that follow on Tuesday a.m. and the bulk of what is presented during the week.

With out doubt TAA in miles ahead of, run of the mill, shows they spend too many of the minutes
giving each other hi 5's in some airport and cobbling up scenes that are lacking in contiunity to make it look a bit better. We see shows where the hunter points an obviously loaded firearm at the camera and PH's back after a shot without even applying the safety and no cut away in between. So many take a shot and then give a running recap of what we just saw.... why?

I do like the sit down discussions or fireside chats as they serve to pass along a lesson learned or some other usefull information. So much of what is on other programs is not the best representation what we are all about.

So... if last episode was lacking .. it is still a far better production than most. To produce a high quality series with excellent content, real scenes ,lots big 5 hunts, we know costs.

Tracks Across Africa, to you I say.

My hat is off to TAA as the best production of quality and content. And all in good taste. IMO.

Thanks.

I hate most hunting tv shows. Too much white tail, turkey, and bow!

As a Westerner who has zero interest in hunting with a carbon-fiber wonder banjo, it's really a pain in the ass to see another show where someone from Real Tree, Mossy Oak, or any host of 1000 other folks on there shoots a hundred and anything inch whitetail or turkey with a bow.

Thank God for folks like Boddington, Tsonka, and the Best of the West outfit.

Hey Buddy, why do you gotta drag me into this one?

A)I don't even have a TV show! What did I do!

B)Secondly just to correct you, I don't do dramatizations. I don't like them. Never have. Never was allowed to do them as a news correspondent, will never do a dramatization on a hunting DVD. I don't re-create nor dramatize a hunting sequence. What I show you and what you see is exactly what happenned. My format is 100% real time. Ask any PH who I've hunted with. I don't dramatize the hunting sequence. So what are you talking about? Thanks for calling me a good guy though.

Marc, you are a good guy.

Your videos are great!

However, that being said especially in Fire and Ice, who ever edited that thing really highlighted the drama between you and Andrew Dawson.

In your Tanzania video I felt you put emphasis (drama) on the 500 yard zebra shot, that was over the top. Nice shot, but I felt it would have been better to just shoot them, zoom out and move on.

Good stuff though.

When are you going back to the YO for another video? Love that place.

I think that Idaho has this about right...others, too.

TAA is often informative, and generally pretty well done. I have no problem with Sturm, Ruger & Co. hogging some air time, as it puts a hatful of money on the line.

It makes me a little sad, really, as I waa a great admirer of the late Bill Ruger and remain an admirer of Ruger's rifles and revolvers (shotguns and semi auto handsuns maybe not so much).

BTW, please save the flames about Mr. Ruger's "Second Amendment treason." Also, I'm retired from the truly silly war about the perceived inferiority of cast receivers.

D99: Emphasis and drama are not the same thing. You're stretching as in "reaching." One 500 yard shot does not define my entire body of work. That was 2005 dude. Besides this specific thread is about a TV show, one segment, produced by a damn good bunch of guys who work their asses off to bring you Africa the way it really is. It ain't about me. Don't sidetrack the thread. Stay in your lane. If you'd like to talk or comment call me at 312 226 4047, or email me directly at sabletp@aol.com...Feel free to call. I don't bite. ARGGGGHHHH!

The old say about not being able to please all of the people, all of the time is made for this thread. Was it the best TAA ever ? Doubtful. After producing 26 NEW episodes for the last 5 years, of which fully 90% are dedicated to dangerous game hunting we fully realize different folks like different things at times. No problem. Same with locations. We spend a ton of travel money and time traveling all over Africa, as in "Tracks Across Africa". This year we will film in nine countries, all in an effort to mix it up for the viewer. Spending a week at the YO RANCH shooting everything that moves can result in several shows for the producer and keep the production cost way down. There are LOTS of shows on the hunting channels that use this business model. We don't. The Ruger boys have been firm believers in our show from day one, as well as a sponsor paying the bills that make our filming and travel possible. We filmed the Ruger episode to show the management team "in the field" testing their products under the very conditions that you and I encounter. These boys are hunters, not just suits, and we felt it a great idea to show that on an episode of TAA. If it was not your cup of tea, than it was not. One guy says he's sick of buffalo hunting episodes. Right after TAA stay tuned, there is a show called Adventures Abroad that will delight you with weekly bowhunting where the same two fellows shoot impala and warthogs as they sip water from a cement pool. Each week-every week. Guys, we really bust our ass to give everybody a show that is a serious hunting show. We are not trying yuck it up, are not into silly antics, banjo playing at the campfire, hanging with celeb's, and all the stuff that seems to rule the game these days. So when a TAA show does not deliver exactly what you were hoping for one week, stay tuned, as I bet we "get it right" next week.
Good hunting

Dave: It's a bummer you even have to come in here and explain the nuts and bolts, the behind the scenes and the necessary sponsorship to make your show work. Some of you guys just don't get it. It takes sponsorship to make these programs worthwhile.

You wanna watch cheesy impala and warthog kills with guys claiming how tough warthogs are when in reality they've shot the animal too far back...or do you wanna watch quality programming of premium and dangerous African game? It takes sponsorship.

You wanna go watch 30 minutes of uninterrupted programming? Turn on PBS, but damn give the TAA guys a break. They've raised the bar for outdoor programming, and are leaders in their field...hands down.

That show probably wasn't their best in some aspects but it was nice to see gun manufacturers actually out using their products. That can't help but improve their products over time.

Hmm, I kinda liked it. I have never hunted dangerous game, and am not likely to for some time. (Not to say I don't want to; really really badly Big Grin.) I have, however, hunted plains game in Namibia and that episode took me back six years and made me remember those awesome 14 days I spent with my dad in Namibia. Thumbs up from me!

I was disappointed the first time I saw this show. I watched it a second time and was more impressed.
In between those viewings, I was thumbing through an old Gun Digest from 1963. There was an article about using the 'new' Ruger 44 mag rifle in Africa, complete with photos of a young Bill Ruger. I looked for owners and upper management types from other companies through my incomplete collection of Gun Digests. Then I got to thinking about the folks you see on TV hunting. Some company spokespersons and tech reps, but almost no suits. The bullet companies and the archery manufacturers seem to be exceptions. They were pretty well represented. Bill Ruger was an innovator in the business who did not believe in focus groups. He believed that manufacturers should know what their customers want. Ruger continues to bring out new products for that small group that hunt or want to hunt Africa. Changed my mind about that TAA show.
On a side point, in the years I've worked parttime behind a gun counter, it has surprised me how few gun and optics sales guys hunt.
Nice to see guys that hunt making guns.

I think the TAA crew did their usual outstanding job behind the cameras. The Ruger guys just seemed a bit awkward and contrived; and not thrilled to pieces just to be in Africa hunting.
The magic didn't ever happen. 99% of the time, the hunters look like this is the hunt of their lifetime, even some that have been to Africa a number of times. Heck, Craig has made what; seventy safaris: and he always looks like a kid at Christmas. Maybe with just two trips under my belt I am still to amazed to actually survive that eighteen hour flight and be smelling African air.
I dunno, Africa, both times, has been the best thing since getting out of Vietnam alive and fairly well, and getting married to my wife nearly twenty years ago. And the kids.

The only way I can get to sleep in camp at night, is by telling myself if I don't get a good night's sleep I can't hunt the next day.

I just couldn't transport myself there this one time with TAA...
