I've never actually seen a list of countries that allow hunting with a list of huntable species for each.

And I'd like to see this extend beyond Africa to include Europe, Asia, Oceana and the Americas.

This seems the best forum to ask Big Grin

Right now the Safari Guide 2007-008 as published by Safari Press and written by Peter Flack and Craig Boddington has the information on Africa that you are seeking. As to all other countries, I don't know of a definitive book or books that contains that information. Maybe Bill Quimby would know. He frequents this forum quite often.

Other than the various books on hunting in Africa and Canada/USA, I don't know of anything that lists "countries that allow hunting with a list of huntable species for each."

The closest that come to mind would be the SCI record books that have maps and natural history text for each species and their various subspecies for each continent.

Unfortunately, the "date taken" and "where taken" columns would show only where SCI members have hunted, and not necessarily everywhere certain animals can be hunted.

If you don't have the SCI record books, I recommend you obtain them -- even the out-of-date copies have valuable information on big game animals that you will find nowhere else.

I know, because I used to edit them. Smiler

Ditto on the SCI books. All SCI members can access the Trophy Scoring section forum and read a list of all animals accepted by SCI. You can also find a great deal of info in the Rowland Ward record books. Good hunting, LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Bill

Is there a place where you can purchase the out-of-date copies of the SCI record books relatively cheap?

As to the original question; what publication list all animals that are legal to hunt in each country in Africa open to hunting? As far as I know only the Safari Guide 2006-2007 edited by Peter Flack does this. No other book, DVD or web site I know of has this info. As for a list of all game animals that occur in African countries: African Hunter II edited by Boddington and Flack. Both lists are very exhaustive and well researched, Flack and Boddington know their business.

I have both the Safari Guide and African Hunter II and refer to them on a regular basis. Outstanding resources. I also get PM's quite often from forum members who need info that they can't get elsewhere. I don't mind helping but do yourself a favor and buy the book!

"Hunting Africa...A Practical Guide" by Botes, Swan and Smit has a detailed appendix with distribution maps for each species. In other words, it shows you where species X occurs, as well as providing a one page summary of habits, habitat, identification, breeding season, etc. This book provides an exhaustive "How To" on African Hunting as well a lot of practical and technical advice at to as rifles, calibers and ballistics. We have them in stock

Skinner sought:

"a list of countries that allow hunting with a list of huntable species for each. ... And I'd like to see this extend beyond Africa to include Europe, Asia, Oceana and the Americas."

As noted here, there are sources for Africa, but none that I know that covers all six continents where hunting takes place.

It shouldn't be too tough to assemble lists for North America and Europe.

Putting together lists for every country in Asia, South America, and the South Pacific (other than Australia and New Zealand) would be tougher, if not impossible.

I suspect the lists would be out-of-date, if they could be produced, before they could be put in print.

Any recent edition of the SCI record book still is the the best source for learning what animal is found in each country.

The problem would be in learning whether they can and cannot be legally hunted in those countries.

CITES also might be of help, but I doubt it.
