Bill/OregonDavid Hulme - Rest In Peace
I am so very sorry for David's family, and worried for the future of the places he sought to protect.
So now he is fishing again with Pencil, I hope ...
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

MartyThis is terrible news. I never had the privilege of meeting David, but after reading "Shangaan Song" and corresponding with him, I felt like I knew him.
My impression was that he was just getting things sorted out for himself.
My condolences to his family and many friends.

Todd WilliamsI just logged on today to catch up on any DSC news. I'm shocked to read of David's passing. Although we never met in person, we shared many conversations through email, AR PMs, and FaceBook. I believe him to have been a true conservationist, striving to understand all sides of the wildlife equation and educating those willing to listen to reason.
I am truly saddened to hear he is no longer with us. May God rest his soul and may he long be remembered for the good deeds he performed in support of wildlife.

Cajun1956After revisiting David's Borderline Walk Facebook, I have realized that Zimbabwe's flora, fauna, and its people have lost one of its most dedicated advocates. David's photos capture the beauty of Zimbabwe's threatened/endangered wildlife and the people who inhabit the wildlife areas.
Rest in peace my friend.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.
-Seth Peterson

Guy WhittallDavid (Mafunga) - your stories were second to none - your take of Jimmy the Rhino, Shangaan Song, The famous Borderline Walk, which sadly you won't get to photograph and we will not get to hear the remainder of. Your campfire stories and knowledge of the beautiful low veld and its characters, always had peoples full attention - and your laugh was contagious - you lived a colourful life friend and saw more of Zimbabwe than anyone i know - Rest now big fella - until we meet again, Fambai Zvakanaka. Madelon George Jonnie and Janna - our thoughts and prayers are with you at this absolutely terrible time. Shum, i wish you could see how many beautiful messages have been written to you on AR and Facebook - you a legend. Miss you.

Sherrill Philip NeeseThis is terrible. Very shocking. He and I "met" during the Jimmy The Rhino campaign. The amount of work that he did was tremendous. Man oh man… Just unbelievable.

R.JollyI had the privelege of spending a couple of days in camp with Dave during his borderline walk. He was one of life's characters and will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family.

JPKI enjoyed the opportunity to spend time in camp with him and also on elephant tracks. We were charged by a cow at Humani, David never flinched, just continued to take photos, and the elephant was stopped just six or seven yards from him. He took some awesome photos of the charge.
I pray he rests in peace, and condolences to all who will miss him.

Use Enough GunAbsolutely shocking! David personally autographed a copy of one of my all time favorite books, Shangaan Song. I too, followed his tales of Jimmy the rhino and the Borderline Walk. A man with a big and generous heart who wished with all of his heart to save the wildness of Zimbabwe. My deepest condolences to all of his family.
