I've noticed that if I don't eat before taking my meds that I feel sick to my stomach. I'm still taking Doxy from my Zim trip and I actually threw up the other day. Then I realized what the pattern was...don't eat first...feel sick soon after taking meds. Maybe I have morning sickness...nah, can't be. _______________________________

Depending on your age, this could be the first sign of the monopause! I have never felt anything caused by malaria pills. I usually take mine before going to bed

Well, Saeed you probably take them on a regular basis. I don't have any problems unless I don't eat. I just don't like taking pills anyway unless I have to. These aren't optional! _______________________________

There is a good article on malaria in the current issue of National Geographic magazine. Whatever you do, keep taking those pills. Not taking them is not an option I would take.

Even if your Doc prescribes Larium, do not take this drug, it may ruin your whole hunt.

I think he means, talk you doctor into giving you Malarone instead. That's what I did on the last trip. Much better for me. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

I took larium last month and it only made me sick when I had to pay for it.

Malarone did not make me sick. I am going to Zim in September. Besides tetanus booster, what other shots/meds would you guys recommend? Indy Life is short. Hunt hard.

Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic or check out the CDC-recommended list. I had tetanus, Hep A&B, typhoid, and a polio booster. Did I leave one out? ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

Yukon, Doxy is nothing more than a broad spectrum antibiotic. Like all antibiotics you should take them with food. Did you doctor not tell you that? By the way I am one of the few people out there that does have slight difficulties with Malerone. I have vivid dreams, a hard time sleeping and headaches with Malerone. I think I'll try Doxy next time.

I second this. | |||

False statement, whenever you get an antibiotic follow the directions and instruction provided by your Pharmacist.
+1, it is a very good article. Explains the disease and the socio-economic problems associated with eradication.

I believe the nurse did say to take it with food but now that I'm back in the States and running with the rat race again, sometimes I forget and I'm not a big breakfast kind of guy anyway. I saw the National Geo cover on the newstand and meant to look at it. _______________________________

Most of the scrips say with "food or milk". I found Malarone quite easy to take with just a glass of milk. Like you, I can be extremely busy in the morning. I took mine at breakfast during the hunt, and for the return home, just a glass of milk as I ran out the door to work.

In Tanzania last year I had exactly the same experience with Doxy. If I ate, even just a little like a couple pieces of toast, I was fine. If I did not eat, I would feel sick to my stomach and even threw up the first morning I was there. Mike

Took Larium in Zim this past Feb. No problems but I will look into other options before the next trip. SD Hunter I guess I should have been more specific! Here are the side affects and warnings specific to Doxycycline. In regards to Doxy my statement is in fact NOT FALSE! Nor is it with most common antibiotics. From the CDC website I also looked it up in the PDR. before I posted this important little piece of information the last time. Doxycycline Side Effects and Warnings The most common side effects reported by travelers taking doxycycline include sun sensitivity (sunburning faster than normal). To prevent sunburn, avoid midday sun, wear a high SPF sunblock, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat. Doxycycline may cause nausea and stomach pain. Always take the drug on a full stomach with a full glass of liquid. Do not lie down for 1 hour after taking the drug to prevent reflux of the drug (backing up into the esophagus). Women who use doxycycline may develop a vaginal yeast infection. You may either take an over-the-counter yeast medication or have a prescription pill from your health care provider for use if vaginal itching or discharge develops. Most travelers taking doxycycline do not have side effects serious enough to stop taking the drug. (Other antimalarial drugs are available if you cannot tolerate doxycycline; see your health care provider.)

I agree with the nausea but I haven't noticed any issues with sunburn. I'm fair skinned although I tan and there were a couple of days I didn't wear a hat...spent 12 hours every day in the sun...wore some sunblock but sweated it off quickly too. Came back to TX and have been hog hunting in the heat and not noticing much effect from the sun. _______________________________
