Hey Rich, I don't know for certain but the 300 H&H is supposed to be just as accurate with light as it is with heavies. I'm thinking TTSX's at about 3500-3600 fps. Shoot fast, flat and hit hard!

"as long as it was a big Male". That's interesting....... Sounds more like tribal warfare than hunting to me. Kill the "big male" and you pretty much get your pick of the ladies.

Leon, whether we call them primates or mammals or fish or fowl they are all creatures we hold dominion over just as we are but a speck of dust within the dominion of the universe. There is no disrespect in accepting conditions as they are. In regard to hunting gorilla or Chimp the species would be better off if under management that places value on them beyond the spectacle of study. Frank

Mr. Phelps, the old baboon in the photo I posted was old and in very poor shape, and missing one of his big canines. I didn't intend the photo to be disrespectful, but our San tracker simply found baboons hilarious under all circumstances and insisted on the hand on the rifle. When in Rome, it occurred to me ... this is his country, not mine. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Bill, thank you for your thoughtful response. As a hunter myself, I like to see us intelligently represented to those who would ban our sport and who clearly outnumber us.

leon, none of that matters. If Mother Teresa hunted or owned firearms "those" people would have badmouthed her. Many of the mouth breathers in this country and others want to ban the following: 1. hunting 2. guns 3. motorcycles and fast cars 4. anything that requires self discipline, and smacks heavily of personal freedom. think about it. well said! did you decide on the 300 H&H? *We Band of 45-70er's* "Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

Leon You were not wrong to question the necessity to post the baboon pictures, however the way in which you went about dealing with the situation has not helped. Whether you are a hunter or not, argumentative postings such as yours only serve to discredit you. If you were trying to defend your sport then take the time to think before you write. If you want to bring scientific fact or common sense to the table feel free, but short of that do us all a favour and exercise your right to silence. No animal, whether chimp, elephant or flying squirrel is human, nor is any human an animal. It is the disney angle on talking bears and friendly lions that is the driving force behind similarly argumentative, Animal rights organizations, that are threatening the very animals they say they protect. Conservation is more than the protection of the species that are cute or which people attach themselves to emotionally; it is the act of preserving ecosystems as best can be done, under mounting pressures from the ever growing human population. Now to get back to your question of what can and cannot be hunted. The answer is simple, any animal species that can be sustainably hunted for the betterment and protection of its ecosystem, should be. Everyone on this planet pays tax, it is no different for the animals. In Africa this is especially true and has been proven over and over. Any and every thing that does not pay, will be destroyed in the face of human encroachment. Hunters are the front line of conservation. They go where no other tourist will and give value to vast tracts of land that would otherwise be left to the gradual desertification, that follows the unsustainable rural utilization of wild areas for cattle farming. So, with this in mind it is not only your responsibility, but your duty to ensure that you do not attach your own emotions to certain species, and to step back and look at the bigger picture. It is then your duty as a hunter and conservationist to ensure that you not only represent yourself in a manner befitting a conservationist and a gentleman, but that you actively seek out means by which you can reflect the essence of what hunter conservation does for wildlife. It is up to each of us, and that includes you Leon, to ensure that when we do voice an opinion it is not detrimental to Hunting, Conservation or the wilderness and wildlife we seek to protect. If you can say that your comments fit these criteria then feel free to voice, but short of that you owe it to all of us to rather say nothing at all. I trust you will read my comments in the spirit they were written and that we can continue this discussion in a fashion that is beneficial to all, and most importantly that supports conservation.

Wow! Well put Vlam! But I find it interesting how people on here with opposing presumptions are expected to be courteous and polite, while those who have thousands of posts and a cheesy avatar are able to swiftly and rudely rebuke any inapposite ideals. "If you don't think like us, well then you must be a peta troll! To the gallows!" Sometimes the right wing makes me LOL. That is the second most interesting observation of this thread. Here is the first. It has been stated and accepted in this thread a person needs not a reason to be a new gun, and I totally agree. But to buy a legend of a cartridge like the 300H&H to shoot baboons is purely disrespectful! It's like saying "Yo Martha, I think I'm gonna buy a new F250 to haul myself to the roller skating rink." Not that it is overkill, I like overkill, it's just disrespectful! How about shooting an eland or kudu first to at least break her in? It's like setting your beautiful valedictorian daughter up with a crackhead high school dropout. But then again, it could just be the way I think of the ol lady. I have a very nice specimen of 300H&H in pre-64 flavor that I haven't killed anything with. Not that I couldn't have taken it elk hunting in the Beulah unit, just a few miles to the west of you, or not that it wouldn't make a fine deer rifle in the big draws of the Steens, it's just that the ol girl has always deserved more. I don't even take it to the local rock pit! If it were me, and I really wish it was, I would think that a mini-30 would be perfect. Are semi's not allowed for some reason? If so, about the fastest gun I could think of otherwise would be a Remington 740(?) pump. There is something a Rocky Mountain guy probably doesn't have! I think they had them in 243, wouldn't that be better? bit ugly though...

I've killed five bobo's so far, four with Buzz in Chewore North. I could have shot more very easily except they have quotas! The fifth one was taken with an arrow I launched 30 yards over a water hole. ~Ann

Ian, I aggree with you but wanting to blast 500 baboons has got nothing to do with conservation, nor is it 'gentlemanly' or respectful. Secondly the whole notion of even thinking you could shoot 100 in a week shows the utter lack of knowledge of baboons and of hunting them. What outfitter offers such baboon opportunities?

Funny thing about baboons. I have ocasionally missed an animal. It does not happen very often but it does happen. But I have missed a bunch of attempted shots at baboons. Elephant Hunter, Double Rifle Shooter Society, NRA Lifetime Member, Ten Safaris, in RSA, Namibia, Zimbabwe

Good luck With the shooting Rich. At 300 yards they get very small and after a while that will be about as close as you get unless you set up on a waterhole. I have several bits of recording and photos of them when I set up for animal watching by the waterhole in Zim. Did you decide on which bullets you will use. I know the matchkings are usually very accurate but I think I would look for something a bit more explosive to anchor them. Frank

Kayaker I agree 100%. Unless there is a problem in the area and there is a purpose to be served by trying to shoot out a group of baboons, then it should not be done. The areas I have shot baboons in are always farming areas that have problems with baboons destroying property etc. That said though, many game farms also need to maintain balance and reduce baboon numbers to avoid having them take too high a percentage of the young born each year. Baboons, just like any other animal should be utilized based on numbers, breeding potential and food availability. I would assume that the reason the outfitter mentioned 500, was that it was said with the understanding that it is impossible to achieve and is more likely to be 5. The rule of thumb with most game is between 10-20% should be removed each year dependant on species. Good luck Rich, I dare say you will be doing real PAC hunting when you go after the baboons, and with any luck you will fill the gap in the ecosystem left by the absence of predators that normally prey on baboons and maintain that balance. Weight is the issue on ammunition. I realistically expect to take half a dozen. I want a large male for the skull. Ever seen the canines on one of those big boys? The owner of the place we will be hunting said he would like to remove as many as possible, nobody except bow hunters have been on the place the last couple of years. They don't do much to thin the numbers down. Like zero. So, now that we have "outed" their cousins here; I can get on with things. Rich

Vlam, I realize that outfitter erring on the side of hyperbole...you would need to hunt an area biiger than about anything available to even have a local population of 500 bobos. I have shot them and the skulls are nice, I am just not a great proponent of 'body count achievements'.

Aw Dave, I was planning on getting in touch with you about filming me for TAA. This is a South African farmer talking about how many Baboons he could allow to be harvested. It's like our re-introduced wolf packs here in Idaho. Fish & Game says we have over 1600. The would like to limit the annual harvest to about 1/4th of that max. The Idaho Cattleman's Assn would like to limit the annual harvest to 1800 +/-. Check your dictionary when you get a chance. Look up the phrase "tongue-in-cheek". regards, Rich

We tried in the East Cape near East Somersett and did not get a shot under 600 meters. After we left, a man with 4 kids came each with a long range target rifle. They took 49 between 500 and 1700 yards. The PH said they would leave bait in a couple of places about 750 yards away, then hide and wait. When the Baboons came out, they picked them off a few at at time. All they hunted were baboons and prefered the long shots. All four usually fired at one baboon to ensure a hit.

No offense taken Dave, you are more than qualified to comment. I gave serious thought to taking my Savage 112BV-SS single shot 7mm STW. Zero it at 500yds with Sierra 168gr MatchKings (about 3000fps) with a boosted Premier Reticle Leupold 18-42X scope. It would be adequate for anything I can't maneuver into range with the Searcy .470.
