What are the options? Is there a non-custom option? I've been thinking about blowing the big bucks on a custom .300RUM Model 70 as a more all-around gun.

Remington's custom shop offers a LH .416, but I think I'd like CRF.

If the custom route's the only way, can one be built on the Winchester LH .375? Anybody had this done? Or do you end up spending more than to buy the Wichester Custom Shop Safari Express at $3K?

Get a LH M-70 .375 and build it. It will cost $1000-1500 or so on top of the purchase price of the rifle if you salvage as many factory parts as practical (stock, sights, etc.) and you don't go nuts with options.



An MRC might also work for you, but I don't know if you will come out ahead on costs.



Another option you may want to consider is a .340 Wby. on an M-70 action. It is a pretty good 'all-around' cartridge (assuming you don't want .375H&H).

I like the .375H&H. But I've got a RH one already. I was also thinking of getting a little more separation from the .300RUM. I think I'd use the .300RUM on up to big bears, and if I got to shoot an elephant, or even a Cape Buffalo, I'd probably want the .416. Plus I shoot my neighbor's Winchester in .416 incredibly well with Federal factory ammo.

Could also be a symptom of reading this board: I now think the .375 H&H is underpowered and shooting a non-CRF rifle at anything larger than a bunny rabbit is suicide.

I'll probably keep scouring for the Model 70 LH .375H&H. If it shoots and feeds well, I'll probably just swap the extractor. If not, it'll become a .416.

Of course, I made the mistake of calling the Winchester custom shop and they've got a .375 RUM Custom Safari Express on the shelf. It's got me daydreaming. Kind of expensive at $3,043, though. And I'm not sure the extra velocity buys you more big-animal-killing-power than the extra frontal area and bullet weight available in the .416. Flat shooting round for a DG caliber, though.

No comment on the .375RUM vs .416? Or on the Winchester Custom shop's work in general? Seems like you might be able to get the same work done a little bit cheaper even on a new gun. But you'd get better wood with the Custom shop.

The only Custom Shop gun I own is a Custom Sporting SharpShooter 7mmSTW, and THAT was actually built by H-S Precision for the Custom Shop.

As for the .375RUM vs. a .416, the RUM is still 'only' throwing a .375", 300gr. bullet. It may be 'better' than the H&H version, but I don't think velocity supersedes bullet diameter on Cape buffalo.
