Has thinking advanced since Peter Hathaway Capstick recommended a Winchester Model 12 loaded with N° 1 buckshot? Personally, I thing a pmup action, or even semi-automatic with both a short rifled barrel for DGR (with sights regulated to get a slug or N° 1 buck right on at 15 yards) and long barrel for wingshooting would be ideal. What is the dream gun?

Well, seeing as RSA and Namibia (Not sure about about the others) do not allow semi-automatics or pumps, I'd say the best safari shotgun is a 3-inch O/U with 3-inch 00-Buck (if you are talking about a wounded cat gun).

At least, that's what my PH thinks.

I didn't know that pump-actions were restricted in South Africa and Namibia which of course limits the world traveller's options. So whether you are an O/U or S/S fan, it justs boils down to loads if you want to use it to follow up a cat. I had just reread the PHC article contained in "Last Horizons" about 00 versus n° 1 which prompted my qestion about loads. PHC says n°1 is better at close ranges and gives his reasoning. I have no experience in the matter and wondered if thinking had evolved in the matter.

I don't think pump guns are restricted anywhere in Africa, only simi autos, but I wouldn't swear to it...

I certainly would not want a slug for following up cats..either No.1 to 00 buckshot..If I want a slug, I'll use a rifle..

Shotgun slugs are miserable killers IMO, as I have seen way too many failures with them...

Guys ever heard of "Vang Comp" shotguns?
http://www.vangcomp.com

Hans is a great guy that turns out some awesome work! His shotguns shoot 00 buck with the accuracy of a slug gun!

Check out the 7,10,15 & 25 yard pattern results on his website.

New Guy,
The problem with that is shotgun firing pins and rifle firing pins are not condusive to each other, so expect a lot of failures to fire with the shotgun shells...unless you can changed them out..better the shotgun fails than the rifle...
