I have a chance to snag a pre-64 (1957 I beleive) Model 70 in 300 H&H. only alteration is removal of the steel buttplate and recoil pad installed.

It is stainless (kind of a flat finish almost like parkerized). I have never seen a pre-64 in stainless.

I'm no gun expert.

Did Winchester make pre-64's in stainless and would that make this one worth more? Ballpark range of it's value? Sorry I have no pictures and I'm pressed for time. I may buy it at lunch today.

I thought it would make a nice Sister to my 375 H&H pre-64.
Thanks
Jim

If it is stainless...it is NOT a 1957 model. Wink

When I google searched I found this.

Winchester Model 70, 243 Target, 26 " Stainless Barrel, Mfr. in 1957. 99% Blue

link

I appreciate your help but the one word answer doesn't help me. Are you saying Winchester did not make stainless barrels in 1953 (or '57 for that matter)?

The barrel on that rifle mentioned above is a replacement.

Well, I could be wrong, but here is what I think I know.

Yes, Win. made some barrels of stainless, then they iron plated them as I understand it so the would blue. I have had them in 220 Swift, 264 Win Mag and a .243 Win heavy barrel. I don't know about .300 H&H as I never saw one, but heard they did so also. They end up with a rough finish similar to the Post-War actions.
I never noticed them bringing any more money, but they might in today's market. Just don't know on that.

Just went and looked at it during lunch and bought it. Interesting look to it. The crown and cone of the barrel have no "blue" plating so you can see the stainless. The barreled action looked in great shape. The stock had some dings and the replaced recoil pad.

Nice buy. Congratulations.

As I understand it, pre-64 M70 rifles chambered in .300 H&H Magnum are not all that common. If this rifle has an original stainless steel barrel then it is really something out of the ordinary.

+1 on the photos, please.

Do you have a value for an original pre-64 chambered in 7x57 Mauser? I believe that is the rarest M70 of all (along with .250/3000 Savage?)

I don't know I think the 7.65 Mauser, 35 Rem. and 25-35 are more rare. There were even about 4 9mm Mausers I believe. Rarest of all the Marine Corps sniper rifle.

There were factory stainless barrels listed for the Swift, .264 and .243. IMO, The most common was the Swift.
During the 30 odd years I collected/bought/sold M-70's, I had at one time or other, a .270WCF and a .300H&H which had stainless barrels. I would presume these calibers (and others) were special order from Winchester.
As far as the number of .300H&H stainless barrels...???

For what it's worth, at a local gun show last week, a 300H&H SOLD for $1300. The rifle was in good condition, and all original. About 95% overall, I'd say.

Probably a bit easier to buy, trade, and sell guns here Andrew. For some the function of the gun may be less important than how many were made and the value.

My .375 I took to Africa was not shot since the early 70's before I was given the piece. It was not bedded, the magazine door popped open on every shot, and the open sights were practically useless.

A few hundred dollars later it was a reliable tack driver that served me well in Africa, looked the part, and came home in almost the same condition it left the States in.

I like the looks of this 300 H&H I just bought but I'll probably screw it up by actually shooting it. Big Grin

I have 3 .300 H&H's all with plain steel barrels. All about 95%. I have paid from $900.00 - $1200.00 for them.

I have one .458 WM Super Grade that was customized in the Winchester Custom Shop at time of purchase.

It cost ~$5K!!!

I would not part with it. It will shoot 1-hole 100 yd benchrest 3-shot groups with my hand-loads and NF FPS bullets.

It WAS my belief...that all stainless barreled pre-64 M 70's came out in the early 60's??? And I thought they were made esp. for the .264 Win Mag???

I have a Model 70 in .300 H&H with a barrel marking of "300 Magnum." It's my understanding that when the Model 70 first came out (1936) there was only one "magnum" in .30 caliber, the .300 H&H Magnum (nee Super .30). Accordingly, there was no need to differentiate as there was only one "300 Magnum," the H&H.

Then in 1944 Roy Weatherby introduced his .300 Magnum followed in 1963 by Winchester's own .300 Win. Mag. Somewhere in there (I think right after the war) Winchester stopped using .300 Magnum and went to more specific nomenclature, like .300 H&H.

As for its effectiveness in Africa, it's fantastic. The ballistics of all these .30 caliber magnums are the same, roughly speaking, of launching a 180 gr. at around 3,000 fps. I love the .300 H&H because of its nostalgia. The absurdly long case that makes it look like it was plucked from the cartridge loops on Percival's bush jacket.

In short, buy that Model 70.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Mate in answer to the first part of your original question" what about a 300 H&H for africa" get one!!! I had one and the biggest mistake i did was to sell it. I shot the critters from Eland down to duiker and it was great. Would love to have smoked a leopard with it but no luck. If you were to complement it with a 404 Jeffery for the bigger critter then you would have a great pair,in my mind anyway other may/will have other thoughts. Cool

Post some pics of your .300 H&H if you can. I have a lot of interest in this cartridge and would love to see a picture of your rifle.

I can assure you, you will not be disappointed in the .300 H&H or the rifle you bought.
In over 50 years of use in Africa and North America, it has never disappointed me. I tend to like the 220 grains for the heavier stuff, 180 Noslers for the midweights and have used the 150s on sheep and antelope.
Just enjoy it and look forward to success. I've used a lot of calibers, but keep going back to the ol' Pre-War .300 H&H!

Brought it home the same day I brought home the .416 Rigby. We need to go test drive these.
