A year or two ago I found out that Remington, in conjunction with Baikal of Russia, was bringing in a double rifle ... 45/70 and 30/06. Being one who'll put his money where his mouth is, I quickly gave the gunshop owner's daughter who was working that day a crispy Canadian $5.00 bill to let them know I seriously wanted one of those fine rifles. Although I have met a PH or two in Africa who owned double rifles .. all the PH's carried bolt rifles when we hunted ... Shells were too expensive .. sometimes the rifles were too heavy for really serious elephant hunting (walking zillons of miles).. (I've shot only two jumbo so have little experience in such things .. just what other people tell me, mostly) Anyways, I thought it would be great to have an inexpensive double and I can wander around and pot a bunny or mulie doe or something . Have fun and pretend I'm somebody! . I've been waiting and waiting and waiting .. The Canadian distributor assumed that no one would ever want a 45/70 double so brought in 30/06 ones instead. Of course everyone wants the 45/70 ones.. Me, too !!! When I found out that the 30/06 ones were in Canada .. and the local gunshop owner was going to a show where this distributor was going to also be in attendance .. I told him to bring me a 30/06 ... He brought two in !!! And showed me the first one and I quickly gave him my cheque for a total, including the nasty G.S.T. of $1,284 Canadian. His regular price will be $1,399 I was told. And ........... he will be taking delivery of several 45/70's in June !!!! And I get the first one !!! So gentlemen ... they have arrived. The 30/06 looks very nice ... I think that first off I'd like to put a bigger bead for the front sight. But I'll shoot it first to see what is happening .. Maybe I can go to the tanning salon (I look like a fish belly right now .. being early March in the Great White North) and get a custom African tan ... put on some funky tan clothes, a beaten up weather sweat stained hat of some kind .. I already have the dreary stare of a dog whose day is done ... and go wandering around the Canadian jess looking for a cottontail/buffalo to whack .. Life is good .. even for the poor ...

If you need any help getting the pictures posted let me know. I meant to ask if this is one has "Remington" on it or not, as the Remington folks at least in the US are saying it will still be a while for us, or so I have heard. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

I believe it is the exact same gun, however some guy in Canada paid big bucks I was told to be the Canadian importer .So it is not marketed under the Remington name.. When I first expressed interest in the gun it was much cheaper .. in fact a couple of weeks ago I was told it was going to cost me around $900 or so Canadian .. However it is listed at much more by the importer ... (1,400 ... ) I suspect that if the big box store 'Wholesale Sports' gets them it'll be cheaper ... Bottom line however, I have the sucker ... which means something in the scheme of things ...

Well, you are the lucky devil. There was supposed to be a 30-06 coming to me this week from Ontario but I haven't heard a word on it yet. Oh well, I guess I'll have to be the 2nd, or third, or whatever, to get one.

Scruffy: I read your post with a lot of interest! I hunted white tail deer in NY's woods for,(let's say) a fairly long time. I switched to a 30-06 (180 gr.) after some sad experiences in firing at the south end of a deer going north with a 30-30. It would have been nice to have that second shot go in so smoothly as you now have!

I fiddled with one in 30-06 at Wholesale Sports in Calgary a few weeks ago. Believe that they were asking around $1000 for it. I was pretty impressed but do not want a 30-06 so will continue to search for a 45-70...

Well done. This is good news for us Americans too. At least we know to the 30-06 version does exist. Now if we could just find a steady supply of the 45-70 doubles, we'd all be in high cotton... Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."
