capebuf, Mamba's can bite you anywhere. They tend to stand up high enough when aggitated to hit you in the chest (adults). Most Mamba's will try to escape. However, the one you might run into would be the Puff Adder or any variety of Cobra. Snake boots sound good, but even in the winter they can get very hot and could chaff your feet or legs if not well broken in. I might suggest snake proof jeans such as those made by Rattler. Cost is around $100 but they give you better overall protection from the waist down. Most of us just cross our fingers and stay frosty. You won't see snakes in certain areas of Africa if your there during May-August. But some areas you will. Good hunting, David

My dad and I will both be wearing our Cabela's Pinnacle Zip-up uninsulated snake boots on our safari to Namibia next summer. I really don't wear them for snakes as much as I wear them for thorns and superior ankle support. I have had them for 2 years and they have saved my ankle from being twisted and/or broken several times. They are also Gor-Tex and Scentlok. They were quite stiff at first, but now that they are broken in they are VERY comfortable.

If you have a PH like I did this spring he will push you out of they whilst trying to catch the snake. Norm was pissed when he wasn't able to catch a Black Mamba, I was on top of the bakkie watching.

Jagter, I'm so pleased to see somone who knows how to spell 'bakkie'. Wink

capebuff, Try to get Norm (Die Ou Jagter's PH) as your PH!

Snakes are much more scared of you than you of them. Be careful, whatever boots you wear. Do not let hip-high boots give you a false feeling of security. A big black mamba can very easily bite you in the face!

Above all, enjoy the hunt!

Another option you may consider would be a set of "chaps" or "gators" I think they are called? They wrap around the lower part of your legs and on top of your boots; easy on and off. I can't remember a brand name or price off hand, but I bet Cabelas or Pro Bass sell them.
I have a couple of pair for rattlesnakes here, and they are adjustable for calf/lower leg size and fit snugly using any boots you want, as well as covering the boot-laces. Beleive it or not as a side bonus, I have also found them handy to use for just plain cold-ass weather too.... Razzer

I did a quick search and mang, I didn't realize there were so many different kinds....
Mine look something like these with the panels and straps, and have held up for years.
I think they even worked for me once while walking back to my truck, but I was in the "pop-corn machine" at the time and not sure it hit me, ha ha.. Eeker

Chances of dying in a car accident are much greater than those of getting bitten by a snake. Just go on the hunt and if a snake bites you, then savor the relatively rare experience you have been treated to.

Dan I've always liked your sense of humor.

I plan on buying a pair of talk snake boots this year to wear while hunting. Not that they necessarily offer any better protection against snakes than my eyes - I'd like a pair of tall boots to wear to combat thorns, brush, shallow water, and twisted ankles. If you want to take them on safari and are comfortable with walking several miles a day in them go ahead. Just make sure they're broken in before you leave and you're good to go.

I don't, we tuck our pants inside the boots.

Just imagine if one were to wear and kilt and snake boots. Just hope the patterns didn't clash.

These are some that Russell Moccasin sells:

I am sure there are many other styles.

For me, they would be too hot and inflexible, but to each their own.

Charles - you and me too.

I would rather be bitten by a venomous snake than wear those or anything like them.

Pretty brave words there guy... come on out Antelope hunting with me in an area that must be the Rattlesnake capital of the world and say that after your first close encounter, ha ha.
I used to think I didn't need anything either...
(just teasing)
Take care.

I lived in rattlesnake country all my life, so far I'm doing pretty well at 72..Got bit once in the hand when I was a kid and reached under the school house for a baseball but one fang went through the web of my hand and the other missed, took the coach 15 minutes of fast running to catch me, I was headed for the hospital on foot!! Hand swelled up but was up and at them in two days, most of the poison went on the ground..

Guess I need a pair of those boots on my hands!

Being observant and keeping your head out of your a$$ is the best snake protection I know of..

Andrew, that reminds me of a JOKE told to me by my first PH in Africa!

It seems a studant PH, went down to the river near camp to get some water to boil for drinkiing. He came running back to camp scared to death, and shaking like a leaf in a wind storm. When the PH asked him what was the matter, he said when he bent down to get the water, and Croc surfaced three feet away. The PH told him, "the croc was more frightened of you, than you were of him!" The studant PH said, "If that croc was as scared of me, as I was of him, then that water is not fit to drink, even after boiling!"

Ah ha. I was wondering what happened to the old vintage safari fashion of wearing leather riding boots.

Chic, but hot.

There is a simple rule -- never be the first one in line! I have seen more snakes in winter in South Texas than in Africa, and I hope that does not change.

I have worn snake boots on all three of my hunts in the rain forest of Cameroon, not for SNAKES! They are perfect for wet conditions, vines with thorns etc. I agree with Charles about the number of snakes in Africa compared to the southern U.S. After 14 safaris, 60 plus days in the rain forest I will see more snakes tomorrow at my deer lease here in Louisiana.
