I just received this press release from Cor Bon. 22 loads from 375 Flanged to 577 Nitro Express.

COR-BON introduces new line of safari ammunition: Expedition Hunter™

"Expedition Hunter™ was engineered to take down Big and Dangerous Game, HARD!

The Expedition Hunter™ is available with COR®BON's own modern DPX®, lead free
X-panding™ Bullet, or the traditional, world renowned, Woodleigh bullets. Both of these proven bullets have the penetration to take down large thick skinned game. If you're hunting in the Rocky Mountains, barren grounds of Alaska or the Savannah's of Africa, Expedition Hunter™ is what you can depend on for your next adventure.

We've also designed the box with two plastic re-sealable, five round field packs; totaling 10 rounds of knock down power. Plus a handy tear-n-go field ballistic chart is included for your pocket or shooting bag.

Designed and engineered for the discriminating hunter who demands nothing but the best; who recognizes distinction and the importance of excellent quality. COR®BON believes that the Expedition Hunter™ is your trusted ammunition for your next Safari.

Ammunition available in all popular calibers. Visit our website www.corbon.com for more details."

Alan,

I talked to the Cor-Bon guys at their booth at this year’s NRA meeting in Charlotte and they told me that the ammunition was coming out by midyear. I asked them what they would be offering that would beat what is currently available and if their prices were going to be competitive with Hornady. The response was that it would be “in the upper ranges” of cost to which my response was that if they don’t compete head to head with the Hornady offerings I doubt they would sell much. I wish them luck but at $296 for 10 rounds of 577 Nitro I don’t think they will sell much...even to the well heeled clientele. I thought they told me they would be using Norma brass for the loads but don’t remember for sure.

While I dont disagree with the need to be price competitive, there is also a quality play to be had. Corbon has a solid reputation in the industry for high performance, quality ammo. If I were not a handloader and had a 577NE double, spending 300 bucks for a box of ammo would be a small price to pay if I were going on a $40,000 elephant hunt.

I wish them luck but agree their market will be small.

I like cor bon ammo and their price is not uncompetitive with other ammunition of similar quality - Superior, Norma or the new Barnes DG ammo.

I have used their handgun ammo and had clients use it on lion. I will buy more- it is worth it

Now, it may not be the stuff you buy for an afternoons range session (I load my own) but compared to the cost of a hunt...

Hans,

Actually, there are two loads for the .458 Lott, a soft point and a solid.

This is COR-BON filling a need that does not exist. They are not being price competitive and perceived quality has nothing to do when compared with any other ammo that works. Twice the cost for half the number of rounds? I don't think so, thank you very much COR-BON. homer

Perhaps I am simply not a "...discriminating hunter who demands nothing but the best; who recognizes distinction and the importance of excellent quality." to whom COR-BON is marketing this overpriced ammunition.

When I killed world record animals with Hornady handgun ammo, the animals never complained about my lack of discrimination in selecting Hornady ammunition: they all were one shot DRT. Likewise, I doubt my 2011 Ele will complain about a lack of "...excellent quality." in the Hornady 500 NE DGS I plan on using.

Hornady works; at half the price for twice the number of rounds. We should all be supporting Hornady for providing excellent safari grade ammunition at a great price point.

Alan, as the USA editor of African Expedition Magazine, can you tell us if you have solicited advertising from COR-BON or if you intend to do so?

I would love to have them as an advertiser, but I would love to have Hornady too.

So far, neither have stepped up. Frowner

I thought this was an interesting development that a big pistol ammo company was launching a line of safari rifle ammo. But yeah, it doesn't hurt to try and get the attention of a manufacturer during these times.

If you have any better ideas about how to keep publishing, I'd love to hear it.

Well, you might send COR-BON a copy of this thread, but I wouldn't recommend you send it to Hornady. Wink

Mike,

Yeah, it might behoove us to keep Hornady in the dark about all this, or they might get the bright idea to double their prices. Cool

Cor Bon's had a .375 300 gr. TSX load out for some time. My partner used it to great success in Tanzania last year. Very accurate in his old Browning Safari Grade.
