Best area for big crocodile?
I would appreciate your thoughts on the best area and PH for finding a big exportable to the U.S. crocodile.

Then if a croc is taken early what area would also have some good buffalo hunting? - thanks.

In my opinion a really big croc is around 13 foot+.In zimbabwe i recommend Safari Areas on the lower zambezi and Lake kariba.

In the lower Zambezi Dande,Chewore north,Sapi and Rifa safari areas would be your best bet.

Sapi safari area is an auction area and the auctions take place in march.

I personally would not bank on an area like nyakasanga safari area this year as the rumour is that a large company in Zim is in negotiations with parks to make it into a non consumptive area.

On lake Kariba areas like Charara,Charara south,Omay,Chete and sengwa have monster crocs. The crocodile population on the lake has taken off since it was made law back in the late 80s that croc farmers had to return 5% back to the wild.

Personally one of my favourite hunts as they have always just given me the shits.

all these areas offer a buffalo option. In Zim there are a lot very good phs out there who will ensure you have a great hunt.

Regarding opertors in these areas look up Bulembi safaris,Charlton MaCullum safaris,National safaris,Chifuti safaris,Pro Africa Safaris and I am not sure who has charara. If you are interested in Sapi (auction area) i will be only to happy to help.

Lake kaborabasa in mozambique is also an excellent option.Simon Rogers being your best option as it has buffalo.

There is an area on simons eastern boundary but i am not sure who is operating the concession.

Would that be owned by Alexander McClain ?

The area to the east of Simon is where we operate, the concession is owned jointly by Bruce Peck and a Moz official.
There are some big crocs, and we do have buff as well.

Hi John,

Thankyou for informing me about Bruce Pecks area. For the life of me i cannot remember the name of the area.

Alistair Mclains area (Tshumashato)is the nest block down from Bruce Pecks.A very good area for big elephant, hippo, croc, sable and plains game.

I have shot several big crocs by Lake Kariba, as well as in different parts of Tanzania.

I would guess any large body of water in Africa, lake or river, would have the potential of big crocs

I would say Carel Maartins at Chiwalo Safaris where we send our clients. He has 20 plus km of the North bank of Caborabassa and 20 km of Luangwa river and he has consistently averaged over 13.5 foot. Last year was 14 ft average over 12 crocs with a 15.7 also! They have a terrible problem of man eaters also.

Carel Maartens, Chawalo Safaris on Chabora Basso and Zambezi....across the river from CMS and Simon Rodgers...great guy and they focus on BIG Crocs...last year average-14'3" for 25 crocs!!
Carel is at Houston Safari Club convention this weekend.

I hunted with him in 2010 and had a fantastic hunt, 2 big crocs, largest 14'1 with a bloody tail that had been chomped off...maybe a foot, Gold Medal Hippo and Gold Medal Chobe Bushbuck. He now has some good Buff available too.

Friend had a good hunt with him last year....just an all around great guy to spend 7 days with in the bush!!
PM me if you would like me to have him call you this weekend while he is here....
Cheers,
