Early yesterday morning I was whisked to Bangweulu swamps where Lary Knowlton was hunting with fellow PH Richard Bell Cross. Seemingly I had no choice and Lary had requested that I spent a day with him. Lary is a friend and I have hunted many of his friends and trusted employees in the past so I did as I was instructed, packed my binos and some sunblock and jumped on the plane. Besides I fancied a day in the swamps and had very little to do at home.

On a dusty airstrip in the middle of no where Lary just wanted to thank me for my support and care extended to his loved ones and friends over the last ten years. I assured him that it was all part of the job and shook his hand. Lary informed me he had some small tokens of appreciation for me and presented me with two custom skinning knives engraved with my name and a pair of the new Leica GEOVID HD binoculars.

I was as pleased as punch.

Lary then presented me with a soft leather case, made in London, and in it a made to measure Verney Carron in .500NE

Good man that. Good day that.

Considering the bad luck you've had with Double rifles of recent, I'd say that breaks that spell of luck "proper".

Congrats mate - Lary is an awesome guy and I am sure the gifts were well deserved mate!! I got myself a V-C double this year too, a 450, not a 500 but I really love it and Im sure you will too. Hopefully one day these two guns will come together for a buffalo hunt!! Nice thought that.

What's with the beard on the old man?? rotflmo

Andrew,

What a fine rifle and in the best DR caliber ever made!

Fellow Texan Mr. Lary Knowlton does the Great State of Texas proud with generosity, success, and humanity...as we say in Texas...he is a good feller!!!

That looks like some CEB Bastard Bullet Works #13 bullets hanging in those loops. Sam &/or Michael must have pitched in too.

Have fun shooting it and now you can forget about that K-gun and Peter in the same breath!

J. Lane Easter, DVM

A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender. I wish everyone the world over had the dominating spirit that motivates Texans.– Billy Clayton, Speaker of the Texas House

No state commands such fierce pride and loyalty. Lesser mortals are pitied for their misfortune in not being born in Texas.— Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Texas in May, 1991.

Andrew,

That's incredible! You do meet some of squirkiest and most wondeful people in this business. Can't wait to see the rifle next year. Hope it is not necessary to back me up with it on the waterbuck!

Larry's generosity is extraordinary, no doubt.

However, I am certain that he would tell us that the cost of the VC rifle, the binos, and the knives are all insignificant compared to the debt of gratitude that he owes to his friend, the professional hunter, that helped turn his, his families, his friends, and his employees hunting dreams into hunting realities and memories of a lifetime.

Congratulations, Bwana Fairgame and well done. No doubt that these fine tools were well earned and well deserved.

Great news! Now, if I ever hunt with you and it comes to tip time, I can just say, 'you already got a lifetime's worth of tips!' Not from me, mind, but fair is fair mate!
