If it is legal to sell a Honey Badger, then I need a Honey Badger. If not legal, then, never mind!

USF&W confiscated said Honey Badger because there was no CITES export. Tanzania does not issue a CITES export permit for H.B. USF&W required one (At the beginning of this year at least) to allow import. Thus the problem ...

This happened at the same time USF&W was confiscating Leopards out of Tanzania. This hunter had two Tanzanian Leopards and his Honey Badger confiscated. Leopards were later released, but Honey Badger was destroyed by USF&W.

Yes, I know, Honey Badger don't care ... there is even a "Honey Badger app" fashioned after the YouTube video. If you have not see it, you need to. I am sure someone will post a link to it!

Hey Wendell, I'll be happy to shoot an extra one next year for your client if he wants to pay for it, the taxidermy and shipping! Big Grin

Obviously, he will pay the trophy fee, and consideration for the huge amount of space the little bugger will take up in the crate. Big Grin

He wants the Honey Badger, and understands that if he wants a replacement, it's not going to be free.

He's a reasonable guy and won't mind paying a reasonable cost for the Badger.

Funny how the hunting gods twist our tails with different trials and various opportunities. I have probably had a dozen chances to shoot honey badgers over the course of 4 trips, yet have no desire for one. Maybe they somehow know they're safe.

However, I've spent 60 days trying for a damn hyena and they are still giving me fits! The only one I've had in the scope turned out to be a brown one I couldn't export, so no shot. Frowner

Guess thats what keeps us going back, right?

so is a honey badger a CITES II ANIMAL?? and if not, why is an export permit needed( other than the obvious answer that the USFWS are a bunch of a- holes?

I honestly don't know. They confiscated it at a time when they were grabbing all Leopards that came out of Tanzania (Jan 2012). Then they changed their mind about the Leopards and released them. (Kudos to Lynette Lilly - Well Worldwide Logistics for getting them released). But held fast on the Honey Badger. Lynette mentioned that Topi were in a similar situation years ago, USFW wanted CITES export on them, but Tanzania Game Dept didn't issue CITES for them.

What's the situation now? I don't know. Anybody else import a Tanzanian Honey Badger recently, or even not recently?

I have been trying to kill a Hyena since I first set foot on the continent. I have video of Hyena feeding 50 yards from me. Had them in the scope, etc, etc.

I am still Hyena-less. I would shoot a Honey Badger given the chance, but no chance ever presented itself!

Funny how the hunting Gods work. I have never even seen a honey badger, but have shot a hyena on every trip I have made to Africa except the first one. Some have been remarkably coincidential, e.g., this year one was walking down the road toward us as we driving on the road. I do think that I must have pissed the lion hunting Gods off big time since they seem to be very displeased with me.

Yep, I've seen honey badgers while hunting bushbuck, but try as I might have only heard hyenas laughing at me.

Why does USFW require a CITES permit for a non-CITES animal?

Saeed,

Who knows.

Why did USF&W confiscate two legally exported Leopard with valid CITES export and import permits then release them later? (Actually they confiscated a lot of Leopard, Lynette had 5 confiscated, then released.)

Why does USF&W do what they do?

I have seen honey badgers at night and none in the day...i would like one also...

Hyena's, i have seen and walked up to with 20 yards of them when i did not have a permit for one. they just knew...and when i have looked for them, i have not seen them...this is not a high priority on my list right now...

Wendell:

How about my civet replacement?

Just kidding...my hyena skin is draped over a carved wooden African chair. We saw him just driving around.

My nemesis is a huge wide buffalo and a 100 lb elephant. I guess we all have our crosses to bear.
