Taxidermist for African Critters near Pittsburgh?

Does anyone have any personal experience, and can make recommendations for taxidermists (with African animal experience) in some proximity to Pittsburgh, PA? I moved to this paradise not too long ago, and can only find guys who do whitetail deer mounts, and most of these purport to be overwhelmed with work anyhow. I work with a bunch of greenie-bird watchers who are already outraged that I hunt, and needless to say, have never set foot in a taxidermy shop. My former taxidermist on the West Coast was pretty good, but I've had to fire him as he has become too fond of John Barleycorn (is this an occupational hazard?). Hopefully, it would be someone within a reasonable drive, but if needbe, I'd range wider. I have a batch of animal capes and horns from a Zim hunt now in my garage and another shipment from last year on the way. I just got back from a grant plains game and leopard hunt in Namibia, but have bitten the bullet and will have those trophies taxidermied there.
Appreciate any info, based on experience.
Thanks.

There is a taxidermist in Robinson Township who does nice work and is an SCI official scorer. His name is Bernie Kriger and his company is Bernie's Taxidermy. A friend of mind swears by a local Taxidermist named Bob Orie. He has done more than 50 mounts for my friend. You might do a search in the Pgh. Post Gazette for Orie. They had a pretty big article about him about 6 weeks ago.

I live in south eastern PA and have used Marcus Zimmerman of Zimmerman Wildlife Art for the taxidermy from three safaris. He is located in Martinsburg PA, closer to you out there in Pittsburgh. Let me know if you would like his contact info. He is truly exceptional.

I have used Marcus for Antlered game and have seen his Africian game and his work is excellent. Also in the same area is Eagles Bend and Russell worked for Marcus before starting on his own. Russel has done 25 or so Africian pieces from lifesize to pedestal and shoulder mounts for me alone plus alot of work for others. You can see both mens work on the Trophy room board on about 3 or 4 pages back where I posted some pictures of my office.

ICUdoc,

Take the time and go see Marcus Zimmerman's showroom. It is about 2 hours east on the turnpike off the Bedford exit. It will be worth the trip. Just outstanding. He delivers here in our neck of the woods aswell.

Folks,

Regardless of geography pick a taxidermist that specializes in African mounts not just does a few now and then. A guy that is an artist with whitetails may very well make your African stuff look like road kill.

I personally recommend Atcheson's Taxidermy in Butte, MT and Jerry Huffaker in Abilene,TX.

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

We have some excellent African game Taxidermists here on AR. Check out some of their work in the Taxidermy forum. Most will deliver to your home for less than shipping via truck or rail.

Here's an example: Let's say you have 9 shoulder mounts, 1 rug and 3 euro/skull mounts. Your in PA but your Taxidermist is located in Florida (you chose this shop because you've used them before and feel they do top shelf work on African game). Shipping 2 large crates to your home via domestic truck lines would cost $800.00 on average. Your local Taxidermist (within 100 miles) may offer free delivery or just enough to cover his/her gas. But an out of State Taxidermist may have their own trailer and offer to delivery to your home at a cost less than a trucking company. I know several top end Taxidermists that will deliver to your home for a reasonable fee. Plus you have them on hand to help you get your trophies into your home.

This is a service I have been offering/providing to my customers.

I make regular trips all over Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and have Ark and Mo. coming up in May.

Pa. is a long trip but for a large amount of work it would be worth it to include the delivery in the bid. On most long trips I try to co-ordinate multiple customers for deliveries on the same trip. While some customers might only have 2 or 3 items if I can fill a truck/trailer with 20 to 30 mounts(combo of multiple customers) then it pays to make the long trips.
