Hi, guys and gals.

Do any of you know any bookstore in Jo'burg, Cape Town, Harare, or Bulawayo that has a good selection of hunting books? I'm planning to head back over to Zim later this fall to feed my buffalo addiction and would like to shop around. I'm especially looking for 3 books on African hunting.

Also, if any of you might have these titles they'd like to sell or trade for, I'd appreciate a PM:

"Hunting the African Elephant", Amwell Press;
"Months of the Sun", Ian Nyschens, Safari Press 1st Ltd. Ed. (in the slipcase); and,
"Search for the Spiral Horn", Boddington, the regular edition, not the $450 one.

Might be willing to trade, also, for some books you might need.

I keep checking eBay and the book search engines but haven't found them other than outlandish prices from speculative dealers. Besides, it might be fun to browse a bookstore to kill time during layovers anyway.

Safari Press has two of the three books that you are looking for. Get on line with them or call them.

Thanks, UEG, but the editions I'm looking for aren't available there ... I wish!

BTW, looks like you had another great time with Brad last month. I'd been talking to him about a nyala hunt for this fall but the guy I was going to bring over for a general plains game hunt couldn't make up his mind whether he could get away ... looks like I'll put that one on the back burner.

I frequent the book search engines (Alibris, Bookfinder) and eBay, but haven't found theses titles yet.

The Nyschens book is out in a second edition, just recently published. The one I'm looking for is the first, limited edition in a blue cover and slipcase. Hard to find.

Hi Post Driver,

Both Zimbi books and Rowland Ward have a lot of great books in stock at their respective retail outlets and are nice to visit. Both also have extensive websites and both are run by families very active in the hunting and shooting fields.

Directions to their physical outlets are on their websites:

Zimbi Books: http://www.zimbibooks.com/Default.asp

Rowland Ward: http://www.zimbibooks.com/Default.asp

PostDriver: I stay at the Michelangelo Hotel in Jo'berg laying over. It is attached to an excellent mall and restaurants. Rowland Ward has a store there with the usual tourist "come ons" but there is a used book section with many African books that are not available here. Maybe you could try them on the phone and get a used book list. MUFASA

I get a news letter /list regularly from Gunnerman Books,P.O. Box 81697, Rochester Hills,Mi 48308 E-mail: gunnermanbks@att.net,Phone: 248-608-2856. Didn't see it listed on the list I found but he has quite a few out of print and rare sporting books. Only bookstore I've been to in J'burg is the one in the airport, but they only deal in current books. Luck in your quest. I know what it is to look for an out of print book. I finally found 'Scouting On Two Continents' by Frederick Russel Burnham of Zimbabwe fame at Gunnermans.

I was able to pick up the "... African Elephant" from eBay today. Now for the other two (and after that I want "The East African Hunters" Amwell Smiler)

The last 3 trips over there, I have been in several book stores, but none had any books to do with hunting. I think the US has far more options. Safaripress, etc.

Good luck
