Question mainly for the PH’s. Have you ever had a client with a colostomy? If so did it create any problems?
Any hunters with an ileostomy/colostomy can contact me by PM if you don’t want to out yourself.

I ask because of a recent diagnosis of rectal cancer, and will likely be getting a lifelong colostomy. EXCELLENT long tern prognosis (stage 2A). Got a lot of hunts left in me, and probably 30 more years.

Final note/public service announcement: get your colonoscopies, I say that as both a surgeon and a patient.

Caleb,

Sorry to read about your illness, however congratulations on the great attitude. I hope you enjoy the many hunts in your future.

I had my second colonoscopy yesterday, all good, no polyps!! No excuse not to do one when it is time, not pleasant, but is also not that bad.

Caleb:

Going on my 6th year with one. No colon nor a/h either one. They're a damned pain to live with the bag system. My new A/H is 3" to the R of my belly button. Hard to find shirts with long enough tail to cover it up. Can't tuck this one under my belt, too high. Worst part is waking up in the night/morning and discovering the bag came off in my sleep. Get 600 count sheets and the liquid won't soak thru to the mattress.

Had Chron's in '12. They tried to collect my chips Nov 12, then I couldn't get well all summer and had to go thru it again in Sept. Only good thing about it, what I had wasn't cancer. Wish you the best with your battle.

One thing after another since. Going for a knee in 12 days.

Just take enough supplies along is the only way to live with this lousy "Fix". Depending on your outlook on life whether it's good to live thru it or not. IF that was the only problem it wouldn't have been so bad. Am going on 30 surgeries since then. Sure gets tiring being the subject in all the carving classes. Good luck with yours.

George

I don't have a colostomy but my Mom's 2nd husband had one. I was around him a lot and I he led a pretty normal life. The colostomy was much better than the alternative. His main complaint was not being able to control the gas. Family and friends just made a joke of it.

Best of luck!

I do, but I neglected to heed my eye doctor's advice to get my eyes checked by a specialist for glaucoma (he said my eye pressure was fine but my optical nerves looked crooked - probably born that way).

Well, he measured my eye pressure incorrectly - it is high. I have lost vision in part of my left eye and will be on those stupid drops until I die. Unlike some, I have no desire to hunt if I can't see what I am aiming at, SO GET THOSE EYES CHECKED TOO!!

Not to get too personal, but are you not a candidate for a J-Pouch? My mother in law had colon cancer (stage 3-4? Lots of lymph nodes) and the doc in Seattle did a J Pouch versus a colostomy. This is pushing 20 years ago. She has done very well with it with almost no issues.

I admire your heart, and look forward to seeing your hunt reports!

Thanks for the well wishes and suggestions so far.

I definitely get yearly eye exams for my contacts; everyone thinks about a surgeons hands, but the eyes are pretty important too.

Baxter, I’m not really a candidate for the J-Pouch anatomically, and there’s a tendency for bowel changes even in the best case afterwards that don’t really work out well for me either at work or for hobbies. There would also be the worry about recurrence.

Recently a study was published saying that colorectal cancer is rising among young people.
