joesterhyena hunt in the Bubye...
My wife & I just returned from a cool (literally & figuratively) hunt in Zim., hyena were tops on my list and we saw close to 20 in a week. I booked through John Sharp, who hooked us up with a young Jr. PH who grew up on a farm nearby. I asked & rec'd permission to use an electronic caller ( otherwise prohibited on the Bubye, but legal elsewhere (?) in Zim.)... Lesson #1: do not use prey distress/death sounds- - we were treated to multiple lion & leopard visits. Of course we were in the high seats on the truck! The chip for hyena howl/scream/laughs worked much better, soon a pack of ten or so came in, tails raised, and ready to defend their turf. They stopped over 100 meters out, clearly seeing the truck in the darkness. The hyenas won that round but I soon shot a nice lone dog hyena while spot-lighting a few km. away. We saw them on the 2-tracks riding back @ evenings and even a few in daylight hours. My wife also got her top wishlist animal, a nice kudu. I'll get pics up & post more in the hunt report section ...

LOL. That'll keep you on your toes! Amazingly effective isn't it? In Namibia we saw a pair of Cheetah one day and decided to call for them the next. Forget about the pair...we called in FIVE. Can't wait to see your pics!
