I believe it is Latin. I'm not sure though.

Various theories as you can see from the above ( if you read French ) The Roman province only encompassed Northern Africa.

For those who don't speak French: The name "Africa" would come from a name of the tribe of Afridi which lived in North Africa in the area of Carthage. The other etymology wants that it comes from Berber Taferka "ground", "property land". That which lives on a ground is called Aferkiw, which gave Latin africanus whose territory corresponds to the Roman province of Africa. This name gave in Arabic??????? ifr?q?y? who indicated formerly current Tunisia and would have given the designation of Africa in his modern direction by the new ones come. Other theories would like that the word goes down from the Greek aphrike ("without cold"), of Latin aprica ("sunny"), or of an other Latin term africus (ventus) indicating in Campania, the "wind rain-bearing" in source of the area of Carthage, since at the origin, the Romans named only "Africa" this northern part of the continent (Roman province).
