What country/area for BIG warthog?

joesterWhat country/area for BIG warthog?
i'm hoping to find a region, unfenced, that is known for larger warthogs? I've only been twice hunting to Africa (Namibia & Zim.) but haven't seen a mature boar...I'd be willing to build my entire hunt based on big boars in a specific region!
Best I've seen were in Mozambique. Here's one of 3 that I took while there.
Hey Biebs,
You sure got a good tan while you were there.

safari-lawyerLately, CAR and Moz.
That said, swine populations can swing wildly.
I shot four major warthogs on Sango, SVC in 2009 and 2011. In 2012, following a drought year, there were very few warthogs on Sango and I did not see a shootable boar in 21 days.

Philip A.Check Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve in Uganda, with Lake Albert Safaris. Don't know if it's the local population's genes, the nutrients in the soil/vegetation, or both, but they've got some real monsters there, much bigger than anywhere else in the country.

MARK H. YOUNGjoester,
Mike is correct. Late in the season when the grass is down offering good visibility you'll see warthogs like you could not believe in Mokore's area in Mozambique. I personally have a monster from there of 15.5 x 16.5 and one of my clients shot 17 inches there. You also can take as many as you'd like.
The area is wild and unfenced with excellent hunting for all the indigenous PG species. Kudu and eland are superb there.
Contact me anytime if you'd like a quote or further info.

shakariIn some ways, it really doesn't matter where you go in Africa because as Safari Lawyer says, warthog populations swing wildly due (mostly) to what happens with drought & rain. Because of this, you're wasting your time if you plan a long time ahead.
You get one year of heavy rains or on the other hand, a long drought and in either case a lot of the youngsters die and it then takes a few years for the population to recover.
Better to go for other species and view a big warthog as a bonus should you see one.

infinitoAlso low fenced cattle ranches in the north western part of Limpopo in South Africa. Will for sure be the cheapest option for a good shot at a tusker hog!

sevenmagltd. The place you just left can be fabulous for big hogs. Buddy shot one in 2008 that was slightly over 17". I understand the rains were short this year and as a result may take 4-5 years for the teeth to grow back after the die off.

joesterIn the Bubye they generally only allow one warthog, preferring to leave them for lion & leopard food, or so my PH sez...

fujotupuThere are big warthogs to be had most anywhere you go, be it Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, wherever; the realistic chances of getting a monster are on par with the expectations of a 46+ buffalo or 70lb. elephant. Its all a question of being in the right place at the right time.

joesterKathi, thanks for "reviving" my post of over one year ago! I just returned from Coutada 9 in Moz, luckily had Barrie Duckworth as my PH. I got my big 'hog and a buffalo in the SAVE to boot. Will post report & pics after I get a how-to tutorial re: same.

I agree that hog is huge, but his tusks have been pulled to make him look even bigger. Also, I believe the angle of the tusks has been exaggerated by the taxidermist.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Hunt the SunUnfenced? Warthogs? Do not know of many fences that can keep warthogs in. Any sandveld with good grass covering and a few good seasons should produce a good pig.

larryshoresThe most larg hogs I have ever seen came from a ranch in the RSA known as Mauricedale. Peter Thormablen was hunting it. I don't recall the exact numbers but it was something like 10 that we shot between 3 of us. Some real monsters as well.
