My friend Brett and I are each taking a used double-barreled shotgun and making them into a "poor man's double rifle." Why? Just for grins and to hunt black bear in the piney woods. Shots usually aren't more than 50yds so this will be our way of playing safari.
Oh, on the African trip we're booking in 2008, we'll be taking .338WSMs and my .375H&H Mag (unless the new Ruger is out first). I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid. rotflmo

"Let's face facts: 1500 to 1600 fps is insufficient velocity to achieve good penetration. Also, shotgun slugs tend to have low sectional density and are rather soft in comparison to the type of solids which have proven successful on thick skinned dangerous game."

sir that is a good answer and I agree with most of it.

I am thinking of going with a machined slug of copper bronz that I turn on my lathe and runs on bore riders like a tank round . the ones I use now punch big round holes in 1 inch plate.
also wanted to make some of the 12ga fh brass cases that hubel tells me will increase velo by about 1/3 so were looking at 2000 fps

"What I don't understand is why a guy would ask a question if he does not wish to receive answers."

let me clear that up for you . I very much would like to have any real solid information dealing with velocity or projectile construction you have or have seen first person.
I dont think I would want to hunt buff with a shotgun but I do think it would be ok as a follow up gun for cats at least better than a heavy scoped bolt gun.

I would not like to be slaped with an early barrage of bs wise ass remarks or ridiculed for asking a question.

thank you for your time.

I would think a 12-bore shooting a BP load of seven or eight drams Swiss under an NEI 835-grain paradox of proper temper would give a fellow a decent chance, but I am just talking through my hat after poring over Samuel Baker's stuff. Never hunted DG in my life -- yet.
I wouldn't place much faith in conventional smokeless slug loads with such lousy sectional density for the velocities achieved.
Stepping up to a 10-bore with heavy BP loads and properly tempered bullet would be much more like it, but I know of no one who is fooling with these.
