Hunting in Hwange National Park

I have just retuned from a hunt in Zimbabwe. At the Victoria Falls airport I met a Spanish guy and we started exchanging hunting stories.

He and his father were on the way to South Africa after conducting a Buffalo Hunt inside Hwange national park. He advised that a 10 day exportable trophy Buffalo hunt costs $ 12500, including trophy fee. He went on to say that you can shoot as many Buffalo as you want for an additional trophy fee of $ 6000 per Buffalo. They have non exportable elephant on quota as well as Leopard. He said 4 hunters had taken Leopard.

The area they hunt is "main camp" and from the sounds of things, they stayed in a shabby hotel in/near Dete. They also spent 2 nights camping in the bush.

It turns out the Spanish guy is an agent and had taken his father to shoot 2 Buff. One was 43 inches. The agent told me he books through a South African who is "connected" in Zimbabwe. The PH they used is a local Zimbabwean.

The Spanish agent gave me his card: Atlas Hunting Outfitters - Julio Gonzalez Marco.

He seems a very friendly guy and did not try to hide anything - can anyone shed any light on the legality of these hunts?

Ma Baker,

I wonder if these are the "Royal Hunts" Saeed asked about in the attached thread.

National parks keeps 'reasuring' the PH association and the operator association that these 'ration hunts' are not exportable and the animals shot are 'just for meat' and that the animals would be shot by parks staff in 'the old days'.

Ma Baker- please could you scan the card and email it to soaz@mweb.co.zw together with what you have just posted. I am sure the chairman- martin peters will pick it up from this thread, but it is peak season and he is flat out so may mis it.

With the disaster that is Save, both associationss have major things to worry about but some 'proof' that parks is not telling the truth about the ration hunts would be VERY useful politically.

Apparently he does not mind shooting his elephants knee deep in a water hole either (4th pic down on his website). Pretty pathetic!

The piece of crap has black friends. Normally nothing wrong with that, but I will bet anyone a dollar to a pinch of horse manure that these friends have to be bought. Probably has the ethics of a rabid jackal, judging by that 'phant in the water.

He will be at the SCI convention. It would be fun walking by his stall and saying "poacher". I bet he will enjoy it if a couple dozen people did that.

I like the bit about other Zimbabwe PHs being just jealous of his success!

Poor little twirp, he obviously does not realize how many Zimbabwe PHs have given up on being railroaded into this sort of unethical hunting just because they have the dignity to say no.

Add another name to my blacklist of criminals to never do business with!

The Spanish guy mentioned that his hunts are arranged by Boeta Steenkamp from SA. Not sure how this all fits in.

How do they even get export permits for this game??

These hunts are taking place all over the park. Out of all the parks bases. If you spend any length of time in Hwange now you will come across a vehicle that is obviously not there for photography. And yes as someone put above they are doing their shooting wherever they like. I personally found two ele bulls shot last season within 200m of waterholes that have been pumped for years and years in the park. Must be some real tough hunting sitting at a waterhole in an area that these bulls have been frequenting for years then following him as he leaves the water and shooting him. Pathetic excuse's for operators and PH's.

This has been hashed out many times. Here are 2 similar threads.

He may be at the SCI convention, but he needs a US visa first, so when copying everything to SOAZ, don't forget consularjohannesburg@state.gov
