In the last month we found out my wife had breast cancer. I have a 21 day Tanzania hunt booked for this summer. I don't feel I can go this summer but may be able to next year. Is it fair to ask the outfitter to hold my deposit and apply it to a hunt next year or should I just tell him I will forfet it? I have hunted on his area twice before but not with the owner but a ph.

Sorry to hear that news. I would certainly ask; I am pretty sure Luke Samaras has done that before.

I would think that most outfitters would be very understanding of your situation. I think what they react negatively to are folks like the fellow hunting in South Africa that wants to cancel because of ebola concerns and other such nonsense. Good luck to you and your wife, hope you give the disease holy hell.

First my best thoughts to your wife that she will kick the butt of the cancer and make a full recovery. Past that, I'm not sure what the outfitters cancellation policy is, but I would talk to them as soon as possible. If your outfitter is going to SCI, they be able to sell that hunt next week and all is well on that end.

First, so sorry to hear about the cancer. My prays and best wishes for a full recovery.

Second, why wouldn't you ask? Are you afraid it would appear rude or insensitive?

I don't know his policy, but this far out, I would be a bit shocked if he didn't work with you.

Tip, let him know ASAP! SCI is next week, give him a chance to resell your dates and move you.

All my best.

I can think of no reason not to make the request. It is not like you just had second thoughts.

Best wishes for a successful course of treatment and a rapid recovery for your wife.

I wish you good luck on your quest with the outfitter but your wife will be in my prayers for God's healing hand. Tell her to have much hope as they have done remarkable things with cures for breast cancer in recent times.

Tom,

Very sorry to hear about your wife.

We all wish her a full recovery.

I am certain the outfitter will understand this and carry the deposit to the next season, and the sooner you inform him the better.

Best thoughts and wishes for your bride and your well being. Most outfitters are legit and will postpone a safari for a good reason. Before you are asked, offer documentation so they know at the outset your situation.

A couple of years ago a gent here on AR asked a South African outfitter for a refund has he had cancer. Request was refused. No compassion, no understanding. He got holy hell from the good members here on AR and he does not post any longer and when he tried, well, the AR members do not forget. He is done here.

You should not have a problem.
The man mentioned above, died a short time after and not a word from the outfitter. I forgot the bastard's name.

Again, good luck for a speedy and full recovery. Keep us posted.
Cal

PS. Speak to Jim and Joyce here. Joyce kicked cancer's ass and the disease is afraid of her now.

Sorry to hear about your wife you both will be in our prayers.

Had a hunt booked and deposit paid for April last year when the hunters wife had a seizure. She has recovered somewhat but will not be able to make the hunt this year. His deposit stood over and he gets full credit for his wifes daily rates.

Just ask the company you booked with to have it stand over till next year.

Real sorry to hear of your wife's cancer, just remember it CAN be beaten, and there is nothing like a strong positive frame of mind and a strong positive support group. It will be a challenge, but not insurmountable. Cancer has been a very real problem in my immediate family for decades. Strength to you.

I would have no hesitation in refunding a deposit or carrying it forward to another time, as I'm sure 99.9% of operators would.

Godspeed to your wife.

Tom,

i am certain the outfitter will propose the hunt to a later stage.

Yet again!!!...wrong facts...options was given to hunter, but what you have read is what you have judge...so who am i to try and state my case...

If greed was the factor, i wouldn't have given the AR member who hunted with me the option to pay the difference of the safari...

Everyone here knows about Bushwhack, the outfitter who quit posting here because he was called out on his antics of keeping the dying man's deposit (God rest his soul). He was dying, knowing the odds of him ever going on safari again were very, very slim at best. That's why he wanted his deposit back.

It's interesting to me that this Bushwhack clown would come back over here to AR to comment after a long absence, after the man is deceased and can't speak for himself. You just went down another rung on the ladder Bushwhack, if that's possible.

Add this name to the list of - Blair Worldwide and Arnold Payne.

Imagine the misery in paying good money, having to fly half way around the world and then spending time and having a sun downer with this fine individual.

Damn a lot of bitterness towards AR. Maybe it hurting the bottom line pretty hard when AR has exposed you for what you are.

Very rare a service provider (outfitter, hotel, airline) starts bashing potential clients in a public forum.

My guess is AR has hit where it hurts - $$$.

Why for all the bitching AR probably does the best job in exposing the under belly of the hunting service providers.

Ain't that the truth!

Regardless of what happened in the past, I would certainly never consider hunting with an outfitter with such an attitude!

The lovely part is we have an incredibly large number of outfitters who are very honest and very straight forward.

They deserve our business.

Tom my prayers are for your wife.

I view deposits as refundable or transferrable and all operators I know would not hesitate to refund your money.

Good luck and let us know how we can be of assistance in the future.

Wow!
I have been looking for a Safari for the very near future. I now know exactly who not to hunt with. I have to say that this fella may be the most unprofessional person on the face of the planet... Ever.

I hope the OP is able to work something out. In my opinion there is nothing better than some honest dialogue between two adults. Bring the issue up now. He still has time to fill the spot and let him know you still wish to hunt with him. Be honest and to the point. I know that I would certainly appreciate to be dealt with in the same manner.

Tom!

I am sorry to hear of your wife's bad news and hope for she has quick recovery! Regards your deposit- I am sure that your operator will roll your deposit to 2016. We had a very similar issue with a client on a 24 day hunt for this year and he is now hopefully coming next year depending on how his Dad is doing as he was diagnosed with prostate cancer- when it is a genuine medical problem I do not believe that the operator will not be sympathetic- but contact him before Vegas!

Not to hijack the thread though it can be tough for the operator regards cancelled hunts-an example a fellow has booked a 16 day leopard buff hunt with us starting in a few months time. The camp has been allocated/ PH given his days and now the client has cancelled as he says that a unexpected payment came up for him. Normally we would return his deposit ( against what our contract says) as we normally have a waiting list for leopard- However this year is not a good year with Dallas been the a very slow show with the oil prices which have affected our Canadian and Russian markets also and as a result we may be stuck with that leopard. We offered to roll his deposit to 2016 but he is extremely unhappy with us and feels that we have treated him unfairly! We still hope to sell the leopards in Vegas in which case we will return his deposit otherwise we will stick to our guns regarding rolling his deposit to 2016!

Buzz I agree some of the cancellations we get, put us in tight spots, what is really bad for me is when you agreed on a date plan you calender around it and then you get a email to move dates a week or so because of a birthday wedding and what not.
