Question gents, On a Klipspringer, would you guys prefer to use a .223 with 64gr.(I believe)FMJs or a 30-06 with 180gr FMJs to minimize the damage done to the lifesze cape? We will have both calibers with us on the hunt (as well as .375 with some solids along). I am leaning towards the '06 because of the slower velocity. Thoughts? It seems that I bat about 50/50 when it comes to blowing up the little guys.. I've done some serious damage, then turn around and put the same size hole in and out on them. With the Klipie being just about the most fragile of the little guys because of the hollow, loose hair, I wanted to see your opinions on it. I cetainly don't want to blow a fist sized hole in him and ruin the trophy. I have Klipie and Sharpe's Grysbok on the menu for next month.

Maybe look at loading or buying the Winchester 64gr Power Point bullet? Rich

a round nose or flat nose FMJ will work. Sharp pointed FMJ tend to do more damage to small animals, at least in my experience with 30/06 loads. They seem to tumble and not run in straight line. troy Birmingham, Al

Scotty, I think I would try the 375 with solids. As long as you don't hit bone you'll be fine. The '06 might work but I've seen a steinnbok hit badly with a 22 cal. solid run all over creation. You don't want to be chasing a klipspringer around in the rocks. Mark MARK H. +5 for the 375 with solids. I have only shot two, same size diameter exit holes both times. "You only gotta do one thing well to make it in this world" - J Joplin

I´m no big fan of shooting animals with solids just to save the skin. But if you choose to use a "bigger" caliber as the 375 it could be messy.

I shot one with a 243 this year, through the middle of the body, I will say it didnt do much damage.

I shot both my sharpes grysbok and my klipspringer on the same trip to Zim with .375 H&H trophy bonded sledgehammer solids. One small hole in and one small hole out. No problems. I have shot most of the little antelope, including livingstone's suni, red duiker, etc. with the same factory load from the same gun and never had any problems. Good luck!

Thanks guys.. I will have the 375 along as my back up rifle for the 470. I'll have a box of factory 300gr TBSH. My buddies are packing the 223 for baboons and impala and the pre-64 '06 for the PG (kudu, waterbuck, etc) on his list.. Consensus seems that the 375 is the way to go (other than Anton's pic, which is what I DON'T want to happen) for the little guys on my list. I certainly don't want to blow them up and render them useless, I'd just rather not even shoot one than do that. Thanks for the input, gents.

I shot a gold medal steenbok with a .375 Ruger and it was messy. My taxidermist did a great job of patching things up for a pedestal mount, but a lifesize mount was out of the question.

375 with a solid....The exit was a small 1" slit, you can see the exit material on the tree root behind him,not even a step. Hit just at the last rib. Seems to me shot placement farther back will avoid that type of damage in the photo.I would expect that from any bullet striking the shoulder like that, regardless of construction, no?

As Dik Dik was on the menu, I had Superior load me some solids for my one gun trip to TAN for my 7mmMag...worked great. After darn near cutting a really nice Steenbok in two earlier, I started using a .22-250 with Hornady 55gr V-Max on tiny ones hunts. They worked really well---penetrtate, "explode" deep enough into kill immediately, no exit wound and deep enuff to not enlarge entry wound. My taxidermist loved it. I have taken Cape Grysbok, Red Duiker, Oribi, Klippie and Vaalie with this round as I remember. Also used the 7Mag solids on my Sharps. Hope this is helpfull.

Scotty, you asked for specifics, and I'll give you my humble opinion. Go with the .223. You may thump a one inch area around the exit but you won't run the risk of "what if." You are correct; Klipspringers are delicate, and they cannot be compared to Duikers, Grysbok, Rhebok etc. If you reload, you have several options. Good luck on getting a Sharpe's. They are very elusive (the rams). I agree: go with the .223 for this one. I know we've already stated that a klipspringer is not a duiker or a grysbok, but a guy at my hunt camp shot a gray duiker with a factory standard .223 softpoint as saw very little damage to the animal. In fact, he was an American shooting the duiker for a PH course in RSA and needed the cape to be intact for the skinning seminar.

Scotty I have culled hundreds of Impala with a 223. I know a few guys in the Conservancy who use 223s for culling and when they prebait. The answer is of course that its all about shot placement(as we have heard thousands of times here). I use 55gr speer softs which have always been ample,BUT its your hunt and its your trophy , so I would say you should use the weapon that YOU are most comfortable and accurate with. The 223, the 30-06 and the 375 will all do the job.

Thanks guys Zimfrosty that's the main reason for the 223 going on the trip. We'll be shooting alot of impala as culls as well as bait while there hunting in the Conservancy as well as a few baboons. The klipie and grysbok are on my list that I would like to take home as trophies. Just don't want to blow the little guys to smitherines. Seems like the best way, no matter the caliber, is to aim a bit further back and try to miss the major bones.. That being said, I am MOST comfortable with the 375, seeing how it's my gun and I've shot a seemingly ton of rounds through it.. But man, does that little 223 shoot well!! I put a box through it last week at the range. Either way, it's going to be fun! Lot's of hunting in store for the 3 of us form the big stuff all the way to the little guys.
