You had to make this racist eh?

Yeah, you knocked that cow on her butt big time. So what? I could have done the same with a 7x57! Smiler

Considering that the .470 is the most often chambered DR in large calibers, I would be okay with it. Oh yeah, that's why I bought mine.

Rich are you gonna ever use that .470 for anything other that a hat rack? I can see that big brimmed safari hat hanging on top of the vertically pointing barrels now.

It's right in your trophy room next to that useless Stan Musial jersey. You should go ahead and put that Musial jersey in the closet and buy a Fergie Jenkins, Billy Williams or Ernie Banks jersey. Those are 3 of the greatest Cubs of all time. I can't even remember three great Cardinals. IN fact I'm in Cooperstown now. I can get you an Ernie Banks jersey if you promise to wear it to my seminar in Reno in 2011.

I have NO shame. You buy me a quality one I will wear it to Reno next January.

Isn't that the Cubs motto "wait until next year...". Derek Lee is gone, Theriot is gone, what's up? They probably will have you at spring training as a non-roster player by then.

Can't remember three great Cardinals? Does the name Lou Brock ring a bell?

There's a reason they call Chicago the "Windy City", people like you.

So, can I consider this an invitation to go hunting next year in Africa with you? You run the camera Big Boy; me and that 470 will provide you with plenty of quality footage.

regards,

Rich

That won't work for you Rich. Moja requires one perfect shot. I know you keep shooting until the fly larvae hatch. Wink

Anyone who doesn't think a big bore is more effective for elephants has their head up their south side.

With a perfect brain shot a 5.6mm, a 7mm, 7.62, etc, etc, etc, will all do the job. You's think that with the undisputed success those smaller cartridges have had that a 375 would be just dandy.Jeez, why even bother with a 375 when a good ole 30-06 with 220gr solids would do so well?

But there is a big problem with this ridiculous line of reasoning:

NO ONE is perfect. EVERYONE will eventually miss a brain shot, and actually the less experience the more likely. Not every shot situation will allow for a perfect brain shot, and you better not rely on the PH to stop that coming ele, he ain't perfect either!

Use a big bore and your chances of dropping that elephant with that missed brain shot go up and up and up as bullet weight and diameter goes up and up and up.

Shoot the biggest bullet with enough velocity to provide the required penetration that you can shoot well. In a rifle that you can handle. That will be the best elephant rifle for any hunter.

And recoil tollerance can be achieved through practice for those willing to devote the required time, so that BS excuse is gone.

I've had excellent performance from the 458wm and it has performed WAY better than the internet BS you read might have you believe. I often dig for bullets and measure penetration, and the 458wm has no problem delivering more than adequate penetration, so long as you load your own solids or are selective in your factory solid ammo purchase.

But a 500NE double is about as perfect a combination of rifle, weight, power and penetration as you could ask for, imo.

Which is exactly why I bought a 500 NE, rather than anything else available, for my next Ele hunt. Smiler

I love vintage doubles & the romance of hunting elephant bulls up close & personal.
I agree with JPK that you should use the biggest caliber you can comfortably shoot well.
My favorite PH often said he would rather have a client that can shoot a .375 H&H well than
someone shooting a .458 Lott poorly!

I've used this nice Lancaster 450/400 double & it performed quite well on elephant, but maybe because
I read the AR forums so much, I convinced myself to buy a nice vintage 500/465 H&H. I
hope the next elephant I shoot with it notices the extra 80 grains of bullet

tu2 I fixed your post for you, but you certainly got that right. I have signed balls by all three! You forgot Ron Santo though, who should be in the HOF, he and Billy Williams are my two favorites of all time!

Were you convinced about the 500 in grade school or junior high? Cool

Daddy Rich; You're welcome in my safari camp anytime, but you'd have to come to the ranch first and practice with me. I have a hell of a dangerous course set up. You'd be the first guy from Idaho to ever shoot it. After you warm up on the course and shoot the elephant targets, my son and I will treat you to Wrigley to watch the Cubs. You've heard of them? It's a minor league baseball team, masquerading as a major league team. The GM has his sights set on drafting junior. I told him please don't!

BTW loved Lou Brock and Ted Williams. Did you know he was a helluve safari hunter?

I heard that Bob Gibson was a pretty fair pitcher.

For all of you .500 NE boys, I will give you credit for getting the bullet diameter right.

But for choosing 19th century rifle, cartridge and bullet designs, no credit at all. Big Grin

You need to modernize. Join the 20th century. Cool

I know it's the 21st, but things have been kinda slow as far as revolutionary developments in firearms go for the last ten years.

Step away from the jacketed lead slugs your grandfather used, and modernize to monolithics.

Load them into a big belted case, then soup them up with a caseful of modern powder to say, about 2,500 fps.

Then, you need to chamber that round in a magnum actioned magazine rifle, with a four or five round capacity.

Yep, that's what you need. The .500 NE on steroids in a repeating rifle.

Strangely enough, that's what I use. Big Grin Cool

Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!
