I know hunting has been closed in Kenya since 1977. I was wondering if anyone or any group has or is trying to reopen hunting there. Big game hunting seems to curb poaching and brings in quite a bit of money to other countries. Other countries have opened and even reopened after closures.Just wondering what the problem is in Kenya. | ||

Well just to start....no animals left outside of national parks, rampant poaching, and a government that is sooooooo antihunting that they try to stop hunting in other countries. Kenya has been bought and payed for by the bunny huggers. Unless hunters can offer more money and spend yrs developing population grouth of the animals. a few private estates have good animals but there few and far between.Tsavo area outside the park has been desimated as well as all other areas. you can travel for days and not see anything but baboons and zebra. Kenyas dont like to eat zebra is the only reason there are any of them left. A friend of mine that is a Natural Born Kenyan was recently looking into opening up a concession in Kenya, and was thinking it had a good possibility of happenning in the next several years. Lately though the the plans fell through with unrealistic pay offs and conditions to run a camp. Has dropped all plans of Kenya and is now looking into Tanzania. | |||

I was in Kenya for a few weeks last April, on the Athi plains and north of Archers Post. The place had plenty of game, and appeared no less than when I first went there in 92. Kenya is a beautiful place and yes, private ranchers like the ones on the Athi Plains still hold game. As do remote places such as north of Archers post (the great old Camel and foot Safari areas). Lets hope for better times. | |||

My best friend is in the military. He did a tour in Kenya. He was posted in the NFD near Garissa. They saw a few oryx, ostrich, and giraffe, but that was about it. They lived in tents. One night he had to relieve himself. As he stepped out to the tent a lioness was standing there in the dark looking at him.  Needless to say he waited until morning!!!! Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. I've attended several SCI committee meetings where this topic was discussed. SCI continues to monitor the situation and routinely provides input to the Kenyan "Minister" in charge. Another way that SCI is doing what they can. I was based there often during the 90's. We were either in Nairobbery or Lokichoggio up north. Beautiful place, but the street crime in Nairobi was bad then and I hear is much worse now. The con artists are legion. Corruption and petty theft was rampant. Our project manager had six grand stolen from his office in the Nairobi Safari Club Hotel by someone with a key. I saw the guy go in while I was waiting for the elevator. but thought it was a hotel employee. It wasn't. Moi was involved in shipping poached ivory out of the country on Kenya Airways. The place rivals Mexico or Indonesia as the most corrupt country on the planet. | |||

the background looks alot like the Tita Taveta area. but alot of Kenya looks like that but that was a great area to hunt at the time the picture was taken. I lived ther for 8 months last yr. | |||
