Detachable magazines can work pretty well, especially in established systems, like most military arms.

But in those cases, the magazines are considered expendable supply. The mags will wear and gradually become useless.

I have yet to see a hunting gun that has been around as long as a service rifle with a detachable mag...they get changed to a new model quickly, and where are you when it gets lost or wears out?

I have a Kimber .22 that I can't use for silhouette shooting now because I cannot find 2 magazines for it. I suspect I am not alone there.

Contrast that to some of my older rifles that are past the century mark that shoot as well as they ever did...and still have their full capacity available.

A detachable mag can be designed to have the single load option, with a rifle that has an open port to help that...but does anyone have an answer for orphaned rifles with no new mags available?

Not sure if this will help, but Numrich Arms has always been my go-to place for magazines:

Kimber Magazines

I always buy at least two or three extras for any gun that uses them.

If nothing else works, you can look for the same model rifle for sale with one or more extra magazines.

Then keep one or more magazines, and sell one of the rifles with at least one other.

I bought a magazine for a Sako a few years back from the Beretta website. Now at least once a month I get an e-mail of something they want to sell. I imagine they would ship to NZ, but as noted I expect the price to be high, considering all that you get is a box with spring & follower. How much could that have cost to make?

In Germany we pay double the price. Which is of course ridiculous.
